It looks like the new Safeway is finally going to open later this year. It only took, what, 10 years to build, lol! I'm looking forward to some aspects of it (selection, Starbucks, etc), but I am worried that it will put Food Lion and Acme under, as well as a bunch of locally owned stores, and it could be a sign of things to come like Wal-Mart types and big chain places.

I'm looking forward to shopping there. And I think some additional development and amenities would be ok. We just need to find a balance that will make life easier and nicer, but keep our small town feel. Not impossible.
I've been in a few of the newer Safeways and they are fantastic.

How are we supposd to keep our small town feel which is already all but lost if you think we need additional development. Look around, do you not see the develpment that is already taking place. How about putting some good use to the abandoned outlets at the Narrows before taking over more open farm land and every 1/2 acre lot that rarely exist anymore.

People, we already have a great coffee shop in the old outlets. If you try the coffee you will see it is much better than any Starbucks! Besides it's owned by a very nice couple that lives on the island. Try the SPOT... Not Starbucks

I'm sure I will also frequent Safeway, just as I do the existing one, but that still doesn't mean the Island could use some additional development!

Why on earth would anyone shop at Safeway, that place is EXPENSIVE. Take a little trip 30 miles longer and save tons of money and taxes. Shop Super Wal-Mart. I challenge anyone to get the same shopping list as me at Safeway and spend the same amount I do at SW. 150 items for $200.00

If i was to save $20 by driving to wal-mart i might end only saving $5 because i spent $15 on gas. And why would i drive an hour round trip to buy groceries, thats silly.

Owner was nice enough to let me get a latte at 3:45PM though they close @ 3PM. While that was great it is also the problem - closing at 3PM. The atmosphere in there looks slow and relaxed, wireless internet, etc but you need to be open in the evenings. If they were open till even 8PM for the post-evening coffee out with the wife, they would earn my business. This is the nitch the Love Point Cafe had with us.

I'm sure we will shop the new safeway cause we shop the old one. I will still buy my deli meats @ Acme but overall i think safeway has better produce & meats & selection than Acme or Food Lion. Maybe they need an upgrade to compete. I never heard of Acme (except in cartoons ) until my fiance & I got together apparently they are big in DE - he loved Acme but says this one here stinks... About the coffee shop - I love a good cup of joe - addicted to dunkin donuts - every morning stop - actually budget that crap in - maybe i need a 12 step program or something.... But back on topic (sorta) we venture to easton about 2 times a month and there is a really nice coffee shop out there on the corner of dover/goldsborough... i'd love to see that kind of place here local!!

I know that many people enjoy coffee in the evenings after dinner how ever when you are paying payroll and 5 people come in between the hours of 3 and 6 pm it is a wise business decision to close at three. I have tried the later hours last summer and very few people made the trip. I would be happy to extend the hours again for a trial period this summer. I am also happy to hear suggestions of what people here would like to see in a coffee shop. Email thespotcoffeehse@aol.com
Thanks for your support everyone!

Teresa; you have to speed it up in there. I don't have time to wait 5-10 minutes for two lattes. Also, I would sit down and watch CNN for a few minutes, put in a flat panel with cable.
