I'm working in Fall Church and have to pick the wife up in DC - anyone know how the roads are in Annapolis/Kent Island area? Was wondering if anything is starting to freeze over yet. Just got off the phone with the daughter about five minutes ago. She said it's doing nothing (down by Bloody Point). I can hear ice pellets hitting the window here in Laurel, MD.

Kent Island Roads are ok so far. But if you think about the schools they have plenty of snow days left so why put the kids at risk just so the school board can say it counted. what if the roads were frozen

...so why put the kids at risk just so the school board can say it counted. what if the roads were frozen Probably an unpopular opinion but, you might send the kids to school so that they would learn: 1. school is important and not something to cancel just because it's snowing, or snow was forecast, or it's hot, or it's cold, or it's Wednesday, or it's......; 2. it snows in Maryland in the winter, always has and always will, and the world doesn't have to end because of it; 3. sometimes you just got to do stuff even if it isn't fun. Or maybe you send the kids to school just so they will learn.

Yes but to send them and then bring them home 2 to 3 hours later is crazy. If they would learn how to plow the roads right and keep them clean we wouldn't have to shut down.

That's all I saw today - plows out and about. Glad to see that the County and State took to heart the last news report that naps on the job are healthy. What kills me was the morning school delay. No need. I kind of understand the knee-jerk reaction and early release. We do live in the "tp-milk-beer-panic on snow day" region!

Definitely agree that a 2-3 hour school day is foolish. A lot of fuel was used for such a short class time.

Yeah, it snows in Maryland. I believe 7 days are added to the school year just for this reason. Why not keep the kids off the road when there is a greater risk of an accident? Why put them in a top-heavy vehicle, with no seat belts, on slippery roads? Maybe, it is because they are concerned for the childrens welfare, and not because it is Wednesday.
The federal government is also opening 2 hours late today as well. Not because it is Wednesday, but because they are also concerned about employee safety. Their work is important as well, but dead employees cannot produce as well as live ones.
I had to be at work at 7:30 this morning in DC. Cars were scattered in the ditches all the way in. I don't believe all those people will make it to work today. If their jobs were important, it looks like they won't be getting done. Maybe if they waited 2 hours, they would be at work now.

Well, I waited the 2 hours and the commute wasn't much better. There's a tractor trailer laying on it's side on the westbound span of the bridge, I had to cross the bridge in 4wd because it's frozen, and they STILL haven't plowed the roads in DC. I should have stayed in bed like everyone else in my office.

My wife's a Fed so I need to hit BCD with a smite just to keep everyone in check. It's Valentines Day, so I need to stick up for her ;D Granted, there are a bunch of slackers in the government - minus the wife; she constantly complains about their ineptitude. OK BCD, I've reconsidered and no smite as long as you consider there may be a few competent Fed's out there By the way, we went into work this morning. As soon as we crossed the bridge, it was like a whole other planet. Rt. 50 and DC were a mess and it looked like they forgot to notify the plows that bad weather was expected overnight.

It is always funny to hear the term "non-essential employees". I don't think I'd want to be non-essential. It seems like an easy choice during a bad budget year. "Essential employees, return to work; Non-essential employees, you're fired"!

I always found it amusing when non-essentials were excused that the highways are empty... I took that to mean I was right - there may be about 2 "essential" government employees in any given building outside of the military installations. ;D
If only it were true about bad budget years... the girl I spoke with at USDA seemed to think the budget waste was spread furthest amongst the worst employees. That's why she quit - tired of being bored and watching incompetent dullards get promoted. I was so surpised (and relieved) to hear the honest appraisal.
Awww, isn't that cute? Someone smited me. ;D

"Essential employees, return to work; Non-essential employees, you're fired"! Were you around for the Fed Govt. furloughs 10+ years ago? Non-essentials were out of work for a week or two, essentials still had to come in. Essentials couldn't take leave, they were essential. Only difference from your idea: after the furlough was over, the non-essentials were given back pay for the time they were shut out.

First, let's not forget that I wrote that yesterday, not today, and the weather was much different. Perhaps closing schools today was a better call... perhaps. I was at work at 8AM so you were probably about an hour ahead of me. The tow trucks must have been really been racing today, I didn't see a single car off the side of the road (or any dead employees either). Hey, one way to deal with adversity is to avoid it. Snow will melt, the rain will pass, there was nothing I was going to do at work today anyway. Another way to deal with adversity is to face it. Slush on the road is passable if approached carefully, the wipers will push the rain away if I just slow down a little, I have things to do at work every day or else I wouldn't be there. What's the best way to deal with adversity? That's an individual call. It appears that your opinion and mine differ, at least where inclement weather is involved, and that's OK.

falger, I'm not sure of your route to work. The district was not plowed until mid-morning. Before you reached Bowie, it was just rain and ice. There were at least six cars off the road from the bridge through Annapolis. As you said in your last post, "One way to deal with adversity is to avoid it". That was the entire point of my post. Not sending the kids to school in inclimate weather.
BTW: The federal government opened two hours late to prevent dead employees.
