Was the guy really in fear of his life to justify pulling out his weapon on a dog while checking his mail? I hope the dog owner or someone presses charges! Does anyone know who this guy is or who was involved? Please let me know. This is dangerous and reckless behavior and this person is trusted with a firearm? This is really scary. Maybe I am wrong and the off-duty customs agent thought the dog was smuggling in out of state non taxed milk bones....

Maybe I am wrong and the off-duty customs agent thought the dog was smuggling in out of state non taxed milk bones.... I think the comparison to Bear Bear would fit better if the agent had shot the dog before the owner had a chance to control the animal and then prevented the owner from trying to save the dog. The comparison would fit better still if the dog had been within a fenced area rather than wandering the streets free from the control of its owner. If someone or something was approaching me in a menacing way, I would look for something to use to protect myself. I don't carry a weapon but if I did then I'm sure that would be my first choice. What happens next is the important part. In this case, the agent used some control and did not shoot the dog; sadly, a different choice was made in the case of Bear Bear.

The dog in question is a pit bull that has continually roamed the neighborhood and charges and growls at people.
The owner retrieved it and that's end of the story.....
Anyone ever read any stories about dog attacks in the MD/DC area and the damage they do???
I'm sorry but if a dog is attacking me in the neighborhood I live in now and I have my weapon,I am way more the justified in shooting it.
Freefallin wil be the same person in here blaming the child or adult when a roaming dog attacks an innocent person. Tie your F-ing dogs up and the problem doesn't exist

Not everyone is comfortable with strange dogs running up to them, including me.. I have dogs, they're great, but if I don't KNOW them, it's a lot different. Too bad he didn't shoot it IF it showed aggressiveness.

I guess I can see the points made above, I just don't think it is a life threatening situation for an adult vs. dog, pit bull or not and breaking the law or not, I would not see it as a justified shooting. Pulling a gun is supposed to be the last resort, not the first part of the solution. Just my opinion....
back to the press releases chickennecker.....

If pulling a gun is the last resort, you might not make it that far. You can't reason with a dog, talk him out of it, threaten to call the police on him, outrun him, etc. The answer lies with the dog owner to maintain control of his/her pet. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_dog_attacks_in_the_United_States

This is another example how everyone should be able carry a gun.
If you disagree I guess you think the police, FBi, Customs agents etc. the only ones that can defend themselves when something like this happens?
Glad the dog didnt think the gun was a toy, stick or food and came closer to the person, it would have been another dead dog.

I am all for full carry of guns, as long as people take an NRA course and a CC course so they know how and when to use them legally and responsibly. I own and shoot several types of makes and calibers from shotguns, to pistols, to rifles and believe you need to be proficient as a responsible gun owner.
I will tuck one in my waistband from now on to go and check the mail or bring in the trash just in case those squirrels start looking at me funny...

I have absolutely zero problem with someone doing this. And you shouldn't have to be an off duty customs agent to do it either. If you are on your own property and a threatening dog approaches you and you feel you are in danger of being attacked, i have no problem with drawing an weapon and no problem with firing the weapon. If the dog was in a fenced yard or on a leash the incident would not occur. I would have done the same thing although unfortunately I am rarely armed when outside of the house
