ok I am trusting you... I have an an HP notebook w/ a SoundMAX . Sometimes the sound works and sometimes it doesn't. If I restart the PC sometimes the sound will work for little bit but then if I try to say watch a video on the net there is no sound. For example this one I have been trying to view for a couple of days: video.fox6.com/viewer/viewerpage.php?Art_ID=168205&Category_ID=5The link for Small Business consulting complaints. I used to work for their competitor in Chicago and wanted to see how bad the complaint was! Yet everytime I click to play the video the sound goes out. When it isn't working and I click on the little horn in the systray rather than get a window for volume control, a msg pops up that says that there is no sound device. However if I go to Ctrl Panel/ system Device Manager, it listed in the devices and says that is working properly. BUT when I go to the Sound and Audio Devices it says that there is no device installed. When I troubleshoot it I come up with the same problems. ??

Sounds like your sound card on the laptop is going a little nutty. A connection inside could be going bad or the wire that goes from the the sound card to the speakers could have gotten jarred loose. if you can get the exact model (maybe from packaging slip) I can try and find you some updated drivers to see if that works. Next step would be having a computer technician (myself see: local.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&q=computer&near=21639&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=13&ll=38.971822,-75.805836&spn=0.091553,0.160675&iwloc=A) To open the laptop up and check for any loose wires or a possible faulty sound card. Second cause could be high traffic on your cable connection.. can you play CD's fine or is the sound on that bad?

That is the funny thing. Out of let's say 10 times that the sound doesn't work, there would be 6 times that Windows Media Player WILL play CD. The other 4 it will not, getting the same msg that there is not sound device installed. I would go right from the video where the sound would not work over the WMP and it would.
I have tried the manufacturer to get a new driver, and they forwarded me to HP and that was a nightmare (I will never buy another HP - I have had waaaayy too many problems dealing with them) the model is: HP pavilion zv 5454rs
Once not long after I bought it I took it to the shop in Easton, they aren't there anymore but they told me they could not fix it that HP forces you to ship it back to them for repair. Which I did and the front came back cracked, it is clear they dropped it, the corner is damaged. Really damaged. So I don't know if anyone else can, or wait - maybe that was because I purchased a help plan... Actually now that I think about it, I think that was it.

You ma'am, have a faulty sound card. You needs a new one. The only problem is that this model has a integrated sound card, replacing that means replacing the entire mother board, which is annoying on laptops
edited: the motherboard costs 495.00 plus shipping

Total Cost: Buy a new one

I just bought my daughter a new Dell laptop last fall. If you go to Dell.com, and look in the outlet section, you can find some great deals. They sell them cheap rather than putting them back on the shelf. Same warranty, service, and support. They are listed in real time so when you see something you really like, you need to act right away. I dragged my feet and missed a few deals, but then realized they are added and deleted all day.

I hear ya on the support thing, I will say though last night I called Microsoft and was definitely talking to someone overseas! It was a little difficult in understanding them but I did get what I wanted, thanks for the info. and the help I'll look into it.
What? Give you my PC?? just because the sound won't play? If I need sound for now I do have a desktop, or I can sing to myself, which I would do before giving away my current to buy another one, you funny.

ok so maybe you can answer this one, all knowing guru.... I downloaded IE 7, and have nothing but problems also which is why I called Microsoft.... If I have popup blocker DIS abled. and I go to a site that required pop up access I have trouble. Like I cannot get the next page to load. for example, check this link out: www.riverdalebaptist.orgif you click on the MUSIC link, then click MEMBER LOGIN it enables me to enter the password but takes me right back to the MEMBER LOGIN screen. I am having this same problem on other sites...

Please don't use IE... Download Firefox. I went to the same site and all it asked me to do is enter a password, yeah I don't know the password but... go to www.mozilla.com/en-US/ and download Firefox2. it's free, no spyware, no pop ups, limited ads and it's free.

Good one BM... As far as the sound card is concerned. May be loose connection on the motherboard. LJP, at HP's site, you can download your own driver for the card. Mayhaps reinstalling the driver may do the trick. And buying a new laptop is much better than buying a new motherboard. When it comes to Dell, get the 3 year warranty , and Gold Tech Support option. It will be well worth the money you spend. As far as IE 7 is concerned, if you're having problems with viewing, and using websites, go ahead and uninstall IE 7. and revert back to IE 6. Just because Microsoft pushes out a new browser, doesn't mean every website owner is rushing to make their sites compatible. Ditto with Vista..Stay away from that one until there's at least a SP1 release.

KI it is funny you mention that, the other day I accepted the 'new update' option for Windows Media Player (which is when all of my sound issues began) and the new one looks really weird. So I see a commerical the other day for Vista and see that it looks just like the WMP I just downloaded. coincidence that I am now having so many problems? I don't think so... anyway, I JUST got off of the phone with India AGAIN and problem fixed, we went through some changes that I cannot describe as I have never seen these options before and then added the sites to my trusted sites and a few other things in there and now it works.
I may even give GBMs option a try as long as when I have problems there is a person I can get to for help, I understand the security features rock with Firefox and since I am becomming less and less educated and understanding of how the new stuff works I could use that. Would you believe that I actually have an MCSE?? and that I used to teach PC/ Software/ Networking to newbies?? now I cannot even fix my own IE Explorer and sound card issues....

GBM, I will never try to take business away from you. Kudos to you for having your own business, and being able to make a nice living from it. I just wanted to offer some advice to ljp. And ljp, I hear you about your MSCE. I got my CNA in '96, and my MSCE, IN 2000, and I'm sure GBM can agree, (or not) that technology is quickly changing every hour of everyday. And Firefox, just like Linux, being open sourced, shows those big corps. how to develop s/w apps, and webapps that are a better product then some that cost big bucks.
