I laughed pretty hard when I read this: www.topix.net/content/cbs/3772684444127593213627480690521026772491A monorail over the Bay Bridge with parking lots on either side? What these idiots seem to forget is that the backups are before the bridge and are mainly caused from both the bottleneck of traffic and the tolls. People would still be sitting in the same traffic for the same amount of time, only to turn off and then wait in a parking lot for a train that would drop them off in a parking lot on the other side where they wouldn't have any way to get anywhere. Genius! If they aren't going to build a new span, then the only thing that would help is to stop being greedy and get rid of the tolls. By getting rid of the tolls, the bottleneck issue also is less because it would be 3 lanes into two lanes, and 3 lanes into 3 lanes when the suicide lane is open. The tolls create the bottleneck

Lyle Lanley: Well, sir, there's nothing on earth Like a genuine, Bona fide, Electrified, Six-car Monorail! ... What'd I say? Ned Flanders: Monorail! Lyle Lanley: What's it called? Patty+Selma: Monorail! Lyle Lanley: That's right! Monorail! [crowd chants `Monorail' softly and rhythmically] Miss Hoover: I hear those things are awfully loud... Lyle Lanley: It glides as softly as a cloud. Apu: Is there a chance the track could bend? Lyle Lanley: Not on your life, my Hindu friend. Barney: What about us brain-dead slobs? Lyle Lanley: You'll all be given cushy jobs. Abe: Were you sent here by the devil? Lyle Lanley: No, good sir, I'm on the level. Wiggum: The ring came off my pudding can. Lyle Lanley: Take my pen knife, my good man. I swear it's Springfield's only choice... Throw up your hands and raise your voice! All: [singing] Monorail! Lyle Lanley: What's it called? All: Monorail! Lyle Lanley: Once again... All: Monorail! Marge: But Main Street's still all cracked and broken... Bart: Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken! All: [singing] Monorail! Monorail! Monorail! Monorail! Homer: Mono... D'oh!

wow... seriously? I mean I agree with BCD. Who is going to sit for 3hours in traffic to pay more than $2.50 I am sure, to ride across the bay without their car? Once they have reached the toll area of the west shore, the traffic breaks up heading onto the bridge. Why would anyone get off of the highway at that point when the traffic is done. What are they going to do once they get here and vice versa? Even if the East shore stop is where the park and ride is, folks get onto a monorail and pick up the bus by Sandy Point, what is the difference when heading home?
Am I missing something? Why not then build a bullet train from Annapolis before the Severn River to OC? Most of the old rail lines are still in place. If trains are the suggestion wouldn't that be one folks would actually use?

I believe that the only short term solution is busses.
Prioritize the commuter busses through the toll-booth and across the Severn. If its faster, people will ride. If its slower (like it is now, since commuter busses cant use EZPass lanes) they wont.
Also need busses from KI and Arnold that connect with DC, Balt and Annapolis Mass transit systems.
Seems easy to me.

There's alot of suggestions for means of transportation (i.e, another bridge span, busses, monorail, ferry, etc.) but I think the bigger question might be will point A to point B get commuters where they want to go? If you work in DC or Baltimore will it help to be taken by whatever means from Kent Island to Annapolis, don't think so. If you want to get to the beach from the Western Shore does anything not including your personal vehicle make sense, don't think so.
Personally, I don't see any good solution unless you open the toll booths (removing them would be good) and start building a span south ASAP. The rest is just a bunch of political smoke.

I couldn't have put it any better! The monorail should be filed with the fairy, I mean Ferry idea.

I saw on the news last night a report about the suggested mono-rail. The idea is to support beach goers not commuters. The rail would go from Annapolis to a stop on Kent Island but continue on to the beach non-stop. Since there is public transpo to do whatever you need to do there, a lot of people park once they get there and use the buses apparently.
I guess to help alleviate Sunday afternoon traffic in the summer as well which is worse than the Friday east bound traffic most of the time and doesn't have anything to do with the toll booth.

IF it were to happen, and I seriously doubt it will. I seriously doubt there's any way it would be non-stop to OC. Too much money to be made by towns along the way if they had a monorail stop.

It would be cool, but I agree with BChevy that the chances of it happening are probably zilch.
