The new stimulus bill will funnel more than 720-million dollars directly to Maryland schools and will save 700 state jobs. Without the influx of federal money, schools faced painful cutbacks and slashed jobs. Governor O'Malley had been underfire from some school district officials for planned cuts in his 2010 budget. Baltimore County and Prince George's County were going to bear the brunt of the cuts. Now, Prince George's County will receive about 72-million dollars, while Baltimore schools should receive about 84-million dollars over the next school year. The legislature still has to approve the revised budget.

If those numbers are correct, where is the additional $564M going?
AND
What happens next year? Where will the $720M be coming from then?

What happens next year? Where will the $720M be coming from then? That's what I was thinking when I heard O'Malley's comments on how the stimulus keeps x number of jobs. I guess they'll get paid for by another "special session" down the line.

What I was thinking is wondering if it's coincidence or not that the counties with the largest number of black citizens were going to be the ones facing the worst budget cuts.
In any case, glad the stimulus is helping our schools.

What I was thinking is wondering if it's coincidence or not that the counties with the largest number of black citizens were going to be the ones facing the worst budget cuts. Or is it coincidence that the counties with largest budgets face the largest cuts? A 5% cut in Prince George's is probably larger than taking 5% from Queen Anne's, Kent & Caroline combined. I think it has more to do with numbers than race. Using your reasoning, one could also question if it's coincidence that the counties with the largest number of black citizens also have the largest school budgets? (probably not without one being accused of being racist!) I think it has a lot more to do with overall population, regardless of race.
