Quote from a Sun article on Maryland's hate crime laws covering the homeless:
"Sen. E.J. Pipkin, an Eastern Shore Republican, said yesterday that he opposed the measure because he believes that distinctions should not be made for particular groups. The proposal, Pipkin said, undermines the Constitution.
'All crimes are hateful,' he said."
I agree with him on this. A crime is a crime. The politically-correct hate crime nonsense is way out of control.

So can we lose the exsisting HATE CRIME LAWS? They are racist by definition.

Ditto on that, couldn't have said it better.

Is it a hate crime to hate hate crime laws? If so, lock me up.

It's good to see we have someone in the General Asylum that has some common sense!

I agree with Sen. Pipkin on this issue, but does he practice what he preaches?

Hate crime laws are complete nonsense. If I kill someone because they're the wrong skin color, or I kill him for no reason at all, is he any more or less dead???
Although Pipkin has rubbed me the wrong way on a few issues, he's right on this one. I just get the feeling everything with him is based on his state-wide or national ambitions and designed to apeal to a wider group of voters.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the hate crime an additional charge?
Using Shoreterp's scenario, would there be two charges in that case. (If found guilty on both charges, the sentences would run concurrently anyway.)
If I paint KKK on somebody's mailbox, that would be three charges. Vandalism, malicious destruction of property, and the hate crime because I used KKK instead of painting a smilie face on it. The smilie would only get me two charges instead of three.
Do I have it all wrong?

Do I have it all wrong? Exactly. If you painted KKK on someone's mailbox you'd be charged with a hate crime and locked up for a long time. If you painted JJJ on someone's mailbox it would a simple vandalism charge and you'd have to pay for a new box or something. Like I said, it's all nonsense.

I agree about Pipkin, shoreterp. Like most politicians, he does what advances his own interests at the time. Credit where credit is due though, he's right about this.
