Greetings to all....I have just stumbled on to this forum by accident and it's really cool!!! Where do people (like me and my spouse) go to make friends in a community that we have no ties to? We moved here unexpectedly in Late in 2004 and ended up buying a house here in 2006. I work in DC and my Spouse works at Andrews AFB, so needless to say when we come home...we are home... We love the area...but just don't know where to go to get involved. Any suggestions? Thanks!!! We really are a lot of fun.......At least I am!! HA! HA!!

If you're into old cars, I know of a great local car club!

Welcome to Kent Island Online!
Meeting people here if you don't work here can be tricky. It also depends on what you like doing, if you have kids, etc. TThere are plenty of specialty groups around like the "Kent Island Cruisers" if you are into classic cars, for example. There are a number of churches if that's your thing, a bunch of friendly watering holes to meet people at, kids groups like "M.O.P.S" (see our "Kids Corner" section), VFW, Elks, etc. Just go out and get involved - It's a fun place!

Extreme Makeover (another shameless plug) If anyone is interested in this, or other volunteer opportunities around KI, please PM me (Private Message) Mucho Gracias

Thanks for the warm welcome...... In short...I don't have small kids...my youngest is 18 and a Senior in H.S....So there goes any sports or kids activities... My hubby and I are fairly young...LOL!! Well we act young... I don't know anything about cars other than how to drive them....My husband appreciates the classics and we both watch NASCAR....Ill pass on the information about the Classic Cars...(you guys meet up at K-Mart on Tuesdays right??? I think I have seen you... We do frequent different watering holes...but normally it's just a table for the two of us...... Just not brave enough to worm our way in with other groups of people having a good time.. Maybe we are frequenting the wrong watering holes!! Ramshead is the place of choice right now since DH (dear or dumb husband depending on the mood) is working through the Beer Club....5 more trips, I think he will have the list completed!!! Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated!! I know I sound desparate.... but we are a Military Family...and we made a mutual decision to not live near Andrews (mainly because of the schools...if you know what I mean)..... But I didn't know it would be this hard to integrate our selves into the community!!! LOL!! Guess I need to make up cards to hand out at Ramshead next Friday night: " Hi....Would you like to hang out with us tonight and be our friends???" It's all good!!!

See if the neighborhood you moved into has a community association. I know Romancoke, Kent Island Estates and Cloverfields have them. It is an excellent way to meet your neighbors.

Check out our [glow=red,2,300]events [/glow]calendar. pub15.bravenet.com/calendar/show.php?usernum=1203484294There is always so much going on around especially now that it is getting warmer. Everyone around is here very very nice. All it takes is to get out of the house and start talking to people. We will soon have a listing of all of the HOAs in the area it just isn't ready yet. Do you have hobbies or interests that I could suggest something local to get involved with?

With all those interests, you shouldn't have any problem meeting people and keeping busy. A few things you'll probably need to cross the bridge for such as bowling, mall shopping (though we have the outlets), and the baseball. No problems with the others - except the "Cowgirls", I mean Cowboys - you could scare some people away with that interest

Baseball in Salisbury (Shorebirds- Orioles affiliate) & Bowling in Chestertown & Cambridge.
I'll leave the football reference alone.

Probably easier to cross the bridge for those, though more crowded and worse traffic there.

I caught the Cowboy part. and I had been thinking we could be friends until I saw that. I know whats it like, my husband & I moved over here. We have a young daughter so we don't get out and socialize as much as we would like. The Love Point Cafe use to be great, it had a very dedicated crowd, you always saw the same people. Hopefully the new people will leave the bar alone and people will come back. The Ramshead gets such a big crowd, you kinda get lost. The Blue Water Tavern is smaller & I know some Love Point people hang out there. I have not been there myself.

I have not heard of the Blue Water Tavern..... Ok...as far as being friends......with you all ......Technically there is only 2 (well maybe 4 depending on the scheduling) days out of the year that we couldn't be friends.... And only 4 hours out of those 4 days.....(16 hours ) That leaves us 360 Days or 8260 hours to be the best of pals!!!! What do you say.... hahahahhah!!!!

As a Yankee fan, I feel your pain. Hey, I grew up in NY, so I have an excuse. It doesn't hurt that my team is usually good too. Sorry O's fans...!

I am a better person Funny you should mention that, Mike. The "Island" seems different too. The sun has been shining a little more. People seem to be friendlier lately. Even the clouds seem fluffier now. Do you think it could be a coincidence?

Hello and welcome! I hope you like it here as much as my family and I do. Not to push religion onto anyone, but if your at all interested... we have some wonderful churches here. Also, since you are military, there is the American Legion and the VFW. There is also the Moose Lodge. We have a few nice bars. As soon as I get my account set up, I'll e-mail you. I'm not too much into shopping, but wouldn't mind going to a bar without the kids!
