Hi Rich and everyone else, I know last year we compared crabs and prices. Could we do it again this year and start it running at the beginning of summer? I would love to know the best place for eat in and take out crabs is. I don't know why crabs were so much cheaper in Easton than here. I also find people selling crabs from their trucks in DC and PG County cheaper than here. Why is that?

Has anyone bought steamed crabs the past two weeks? How much and where did you get them? I need a 1/2-1 bushel (preferably local) for this coming weekend.
Hunters said they still aren't getting their normal supply of Maryland Blue crabs for this time of year.

Where are they cheaper in Easton? How are they? I usually go to Hunters and have not been disappointed.

I called the Stevensville Crab Shack and they were 85.00 for med and 115.00 for large half bushel of local crabs they said call them by Fri and they would find some really good ones. I got that price in Easton too because Im looking for this weekend also.

Chevy, think about it though. High prices for crabs..perhaps folks won't pay those high prices...maybe they'll think about your proposal on the other thread, and do less crabbing, allowing the population to build again? If finding a good crab is difficult in the over fished waters, perhaps charging lobster prices would help?

Poison - thanks for the info.
BChevy - not justifying the cost, but I'll take a Maryland Blue crab over lobster anytime.
H*ll, it's a deal compared to paying $3+ for a gallon of gas - talk about having our heads examined!

I was just giving the price they said never said anyone had to buy them. And Hunters was only 10 dollars chepper and that was for out of state crabs.

Can anyone really taste the difference between crabs from Maryland and crabs from the Carolinas or Louisiana? I used to think that it made a difference, but there have been a bunch of times that I thought what I was eating was local - and it turned out not to be, but I couldn't tell. A lot of places don't even sell MD crabs because they are too expensive and scarce. "Mike's Crab House" in Riva uses only Louisiana crabs and the waiter told me that they do so because they are cheaper and fatter.

I can tell, actually I don't like Bay Crabs. They are fishy smelling and tasting. Louisianna crabs are sweeter.

I know absolutely nothing about crabs (other than I do like Alaskan king crab legs).... So imagine my plight when we moved to Maryland and everyone was oohing and ahhing about the Maryland Blue Crab , and crab cakes...and all that other crab stuff, and whatever... So someone please educate me on this crab stuff. How many crabs come in a bushel? How do you tell a male from a female? Is all Maryland crab soft shell...or how do you tell? If I were to buy some crabs, how do I know I am not getting ripped off....and do you buy them alive like lobster? Are cars on the side of the road selling crabs a bad idea? What is up with the old bay seasoning? I mean it's OK..but come on now...when I order a Bloody Mary from the Jetty...I don't want my cup doused in it as if I was drinking a margarita. Thank you for the education. Since arriving in Maryland DH and I have only went to eat crabs one time...and although I enjoyed it...he did not...said it was too much work and had to order a hamburger cause he was starving....So is there a trick to it?? Cause I can shell shrimp, lobster, and Alaskan Crab legs pretty quick....and I did ok with the Crabs....but well...DH...not so good!! HA!! Thank you for the education!!!

There's nothing as good as a local crab late in the season. They're too light right now, but come September....Yum!

We recently got some crabs from the Stevensville Crab Shack, I guess because it was the closest place to home. They were pretty good and fat. A dozen of the Jumbo *imports* cost about $60 bucks. And lol...shadow1....I couldn't agree with the $3/gallon gas statement more! (thus the reason we wound up at Stevensville Crab Shack lol)

Can anyone really taste the difference between crabs from Maryland and crabs from the Carolinas or Louisiana? I Really don't think so. it's all in the seasoningA lot of places don't even sell MD crabs because they are too expensive and scarce. Waiters really don't know all they think they do. The crabs are the same price on the street"Mike's Crab House" in Riva uses only Louisiana crabs I seriously doubt this one, I grew up partying at Mike's, my grandfather used to sell crabs to them, and they are the cheapest buyers in town.and the waiter told me that they do so because they are cheaper and fatter. Crabs 101: ALL Crabs are fat, or poor, or so-so depending on where they are in their shedding/sluffing cycle, it has nothing to do with where they come from, or where you catch them. This one adds to the doubtablitly of the story for me.....

So someone please educate me on this crab stuff. I'll tackle some. How many crabs come in a bushel? It depends on the size of the crabs, the bigger the crabs, the less crabs in a bushel. How do you tell a male from a female? the difference is the "apron" on the bottom of the crab, the male is more of a "T" shape, females is more of a "D" shape Is all Maryland crab soft shell...or how do you tell? They are soft when the shed/sluff their old hard shell, This is how they grow. All crabs are soft numerous times in their life, and much tastier when soft, and fried on a sammich! If I were to buy some crabs, how do I know I am not getting ripped off....and do you buy them alive like lobster? You shop around for prices, yes, live, NEVER cook a DEAD crab, EVER, if you get more than 4 or 5 dead crabs in a bushel I would be upsetAre cars on the side of the road selling crabs a bad idea? They are to me, but that's me.What is up with the old bay seasoning? Old Bay ROCKS![/quote]

Hey Rich can we start your list to put up people's prices now? I still don't get why they can sell them so much cheaper in Easton or out of trucks in PG county than they can here.
I know its all supply and demand, but we've got the supply - do we really demand it more than all of the other areas?
My kids and I would like to put out some crab cages - what are the rules to this and is there anywhere we can, or can not do this?

Ok - I'll place a new thread with a sticky at the top for prices, this way it's not so cluttered. If you know the prices and the date that you were quoted / saw them, please list 'em...
