Just passing this along:
Art Show and Silent Auction to Benefit
Women and Children in Crisis
Chester, MD (March 21, 2007) – The first annual Art Show and Silent Auction will be held on April 28th, 2007 to benefit women and children rescued and restored by Shared Hope International, a leading local anti-sex trafficking organization. All proceeds from the Art Show and Silent Auction will go to benefit the women and children they serve.
Started in 1997 by former Congresswoman Linda Smith, Shared Hope International has established an aftercare program for victimized women and children through their homes of hope in India, Fiji, South Africa and soon Jamaica. These homes of hope are long-term restoration programs which offer a wide range of services including residential facilities, addiction recovery, medical care, counseling, education and literacy training, vocational training and transitional housing.
Human Trafficking is modern day slavery. According to a 2005 Congressional report the “The U.S. Government estimates that as many as 600,000-800,000 individuals are trafficked across international borders each year…80% are women and girls…An estimated 100,000 to 300,000 in the U.S are at-risk for commercial sexual exploitation at any time.”
In the United States, Shared Hope has partnered with shelters and direct service providers in Baltimore, MD, Atlanta, GA and Toledo, OH to combat the commercial sexual exploitation of children which includes pornography and prostitution. According to a 2005 Congressional report as many as 300,000 U.S children are at-risk of becoming forced into prostitution in the U.S. each day.
Hosted by the Island Flowers Shop in Chester, MD, the Art Show and Silent Auction is scheduled for April 28th from 11-3pm (rain or shine). Admission is Free.
The Art Show will feature local and international artisans selling a variety of paintings, photography, fiber art, pottery, as well as jewelry, bags and scarves made by survivors of human trafficking. The Silent Auction will include art donated by local and international artisans and services from local vendors including but not limited to day spa packages, massages, plays, food, art, photography and adventure outings.
