Well, I kind of look at it this way, for about 25 years there was only one bridge which obviously had two way traffic and prior to the new bridge, it was bumper to bumper and we somehow managed.
If anything, I think they need to improve the overhead lane markings, they are just too dagone hard to see during the daytime.

And maybe limit who crosses the westbound span, EZPass holders (they are familiar with the bridge), Cars and light trucks (large trucks tend to swerve on windy days), no trailers, no motorcycles (mainly because of the grates), and no Asians (just kidding, threw it in for a grin, no disrespect intended)

Now that this has settled down a bit.
Can someone explaint the goofy arse traffic pattern that MDTA or MSP set up at rte 8 and rte 50?
ramps closed traffic sent past exit ramps only to have to double back?
I've thought about this a bit, and it STILL makes no sense....

2 months later, and it makes no better sense than it did that night. Maybe some over-thought Disaster Recovery plan designed to solve a problem DIFFERENT than this one ?? Dont know

I noticed that cameras are installed on the Rt 8 bridge overlooking each lane of 50 east. I think they are reading license plates looking for somebody.

Those have been there, Channel 13 has that view in the morning news sometimes, Our tax money at work. You're telling me that Ch 13 has three cameras -- one looking at each lane? I am not talking about the one up on a pole. The cameras were there on Thursday morning. I did not go into work on Friday to see if they were still there.

They are still there on each side of the Rt. 8 overpass, at least they were still there yesterday afternoon.

Whoa there Speeder....:-) Was hoping after several replies, one of you had to finally relise that they're counting traffic. WRONG. Rubber hoses, like the ones laying across the westbound lanes of 50 after you cross the bridge, are used to count traffic. I think they reading license plates.

From the Traffic Groups website ( company doing the study). I was curious what was going on so I looked them up one day. Its some kind of traffic study. Below is what the camera does and I believe the 3 boxes up on the Rt8 fence are just some kind of lights.
Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR)
Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) is referred to as ANPR in some parts of the world, that stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
The ALPR-specific camera and data processing unit collects, deciphers and stores license plate image data, and all corresponding event information. A license plate image is captured and processed by an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software program. Click here for Flash version of ALPR introduction.
ALPR Studies can help identify travel patterns and roadway requirements, specifically areas that generate the most traffic. They identify flow patterns, alternate routes, new streets and new parking areas. Additionally they are integral in anticipating present and future traffic patterns and/or problems.
ALPR: Description of Services Origin and Destination Studies Speed, Travel Time and Delay Studies Environmental Impact Studies Vehicle tracking and monitoring studies Traffic calming studies Cut-through traffic studies

What does the Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) have to do with studying traffic patterns. Aside from looking at how many are out of state, I don't see a relationship.

If cameras were installed at other "downstream" locations, then the government would know where people went after they cross the bridge.
