If the science fiction novels and movies are right, and our society crumbles into "Mad Max" or "Dawn of the Dead" chaos, at what point do you stop obeying the law? I am trying to put out a debatable, yet not-so-serious topic for discussion. It could even be a little fun I was scanning through the stories of the week and found this one....and it is what inspired my question. www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/10/02/zombie.love/index.html?eref=igoogle_cnn.....and I got to thinking: Movies always show what happens AFTER the collapse, but they rarely show that awkward part when the collapse is beginning, and people don't know what to do. Obviously the criminals are the first ones to start breaking the law. They are used to it. What event or events would transpire that would cause you to "click" into survival mode and start acting in your own self-interest and disregard the law, and the politicians saying "All is well".

ohhhh could this be like starting our own "underground" socieity......? You know those who want justice and seek a positive change from the evil doings of those in leadership position...
Except I really don't want to live underground...but a nice isolated compound up in the mountains as a base would be cool........

There would have to be a time of chaos, I agree RobMoore, but civilization has always leaned toward a structure of some sort. If there were no laws being enforced by "officials" people would find a way to enforce their own laws themselves. Would it be pretty? Oh no, not at all. I would suspect a return to the feudal system for a good while...warring tribes/villages/etc. But to answer the question you posed as to when would I start to break the laws, I would have to say as soon as the survival of my children came into question as my firm and immediate answer. If our society were thrust into a "Mad Max" type of scenario this girl can shoot, hunt, plot and connive with the best of em...and I would - but only as the welfare of my family saw fit. Would I be aggressive? *grins* I get told I am that now It's not necessarily who is faster, but it is most definitely who is smarter.

The pivotal moment for me would be when our system of money broke down. When people stop accepting cash for goods, I think the next step after that is mass robbery and looting. I also agree that we wouldn't be long without someone trying to tell us what to do. After a break in government, someone will try to fill the void whether by populasr support or by force (I think the later). A modern day example is the "warlord" system in Africa. We as a people wouldn't accept that for long. I think we are too used to democracy to not want a voice. I'd prefer zombies as the adversary to rioting civilians. Easier to tell who to shoot.

Oh, I'd be one of the first ones to die or become completely incapacitated. So I guess the question would be when my husband would stop obeying the law, and I think it'd probably be around when my health started getting to the point where death would be a possibility if he did nothing.

d**n .gov servers. I will have to wait 'till I get home to take it.
87% it says. I guess I lose a few points for making an attempt to help friends and relatives.

Perhaps if we all band together. Barricade the bridge. Destroy the rt 50 narrows bridge and put the draw bridge up. We all could survive together.

Yeah... without Enbrel, which has to be refrigerated, I'd end up dead, one way or another.

I only have a 50% chance of survival. To answer RobMoore's question, admist chaos I would start acting in my own self-interest the moment something happened to threaten the safety/health/welfare of myself or my loved ones. If that required me to steal food or weapons, break and enter into a vacant home or building for shelter, or physically harm a zombie (I assume harming a zombie is illegal), then so be it. (This is, of course, hypothetical people!!!) I think the hardest part would be surviving that first round of suprise zombie attacks. If I were to survive the first round, I'd certainly try to find other survivors to band with, since there is strength in numbers. Maybe we'd get together and run to the boatyard and steal one of the bigger boats (another crime) and take our chances running from the zombies on water. Amidst chaos I definitely feel that people would look to someone to be "in charge," but I think that the people would revolt on that person if they told them to do things they did not want to do. Some days I think we already have some zombies living amongst us....

Question number 8 really skunked me though...I wanted to answer to a long look into the eyes, but just couldn't do it PS - RobMoore - a great discussion choice as a getaway from other topices of late

This topic got me to thinking about a movie I saw a few years back (probably early to mid 1980's) called "Testament." It was about survival after a nuclear explosion/accident. It bothered me for weeks after I watched it...Does anyone else remember seeing the same file?

As Michael Moore would say, "the American people are positioning themselves for a revolution." Perhaps a zombie attack would be what drives the American people over the edge!
