We don't seem to have any noise or light pollution ordinances. Any one else bothered by outdoor speakers blaring day and night, lights left on all day and night (I'm not talking street side!), things like that? Can't see the sky, can't hear nature. What gives, and how do we regulate it if people don't have the courtesy to keep their noise, etc., indoors, and not force it upon their neighbors?

The only noise pollution that bothers me is Rt 50. And I am half a mile away. One of the qualifications to get highway sound barriers is for your county to have a noise ordinance. And QAC is only 1 of 2 counties in the state that has none.
As for your neighbors, have you asked them kindly to be more considerate?

I hope this county gets some kind of ordnance or it will only get worse. I live on Thompson Creek Rd and have gotten used to the plans flying over except for the couple of times I wanted to run thinking it was crashing into my house.
I havent gotten used to the Thompson Creek Window company opening its big garage doors in the summer letting all the noise from the cutting out all day long. Anyone have a suggestion as to how I could get used to that ?

My only real complaint is the Harley riders that seem to think that having a screaming loud bike is somehow not annoying everyone around them. If I take the muffler off my car I'd get a ticket and so should they for the racket that those things make.

Yes there is regulation on motorcycle exhaust noise.

Then it sure isn't being enforced. It's so inconsiderate to drive something that shakes every house on the street that the bike is going down.

I wouldn't even bring it up if the neighbors gave a kindly rap about anyone but themselves. One neighbor has, in general, lowered the volume, but they can't seem to be outdoors for even a SECOND without radio noise. On big outdoor speakers.
I agree on motorcycles. Problem here, too. All hours. Also, what about skidoo-type things. Truly, a car could not get away with what these things and some other boats do.

ps. i'm talking about limiting noise until after 10 am and and before 10 pm, something like that. Who needs weedeaters and leaf blowers and lawn mowers at 8 am. Who needs big outdoor lights all the time. Who needs speakers when no one is outside(who needs them in the first place). Why do I have to listen to your music or talk? Why can't i go outside and see the stars? Why do you have all these lights if you are not using them? Why all night? Double why all day?

"Who needs speakers when no one is outside(who needs them in the first place)."
I need them. I have speakers outside, on my deck. They are bookshelf size and are mounted under the eve. Music is a part of my families life. Generally I try to have my radio on only when I am there to enjoy it and at a reasonable volume.
Noise ordinance? I always thought it was 8am -10 pm Monday thru Saturday and 9am - 10pm on Sunday.
As far as the lights are concerned, perhaps they are worried about break-ins. Perhaps you could have a neighborly conversation and suggest how well motion sensor lights work.

We must be neigbors... ridiculously loud HD exhausts, loud trucks, early mowers, deafening music...
The HD crowd seems to think bikes must resonate in neighbor's houses...
The only problem with music is making others listen to yours... I don't generally like exactly the same music as any of my neighbors - so I don't want to be forced to listen to it. We try to keep mindful of our stereo if it's on, no matter what time.

You know I notice that NOBODY here mentions - street bikes, cars w/ those ridiculous mufflers (I call them fart tubes) or the many othre types of noisy vehicles... just harleys... granted I'll give it to ya' - they can be really loud... but don't single one out when the others are just as loud & annoying...
as far as music & light - be considerate people... but also be realistic... if people took the time to be more considerate of others geesh what a place this would be...
(wow i sound like the beav... golly gee:)

I live at 109 Emory Circle. My neighbors son would play drums three hours a day when his parents were at work, and I was trying to sleep. The State of Md. measured the sound level, and found it to be 70 decibels at my home. The neighbors at 114 Indian Plantation sold their home and moved to Pa. after the drummers parents refused to abate the problem. I offered to give these people the money to insulate their garage where the son played. My offer was answered with the Burglary & $22,000.00 vandalism of my home. I am offering a $10,000.00 reward for information 410-643-0286..........Loud irritating noise, and bright lights are used by the Military, and the Police as an offensives weapon, and to torture people into submision.......Your rights end where someone else's rights begin.

in this particular case, it is not a break-in issue. it is more of a forgetful or i don't care attitude issue. as for speakers, really, you can't be outside some of the time without them? what happened to taking a radio with you. what happened to ipods and such, when you can listen to whatever you want to whenever without disturbing the rest of the world.
one problem with the music is that, even if it is to your taste, you may want to spend a quiet afternoon outdoors enjoying the sounds of nature--water, birds, whatever--without artificial noise being IMPOSED on you. traffic from a highway, etc., for example, is not something easily dealt with. but personal noise outside of your personal space is offensive and rude and inconsiderate. likewise lighting up your neighbor's yard. it's not as if we live on mega-parcels with plenty of room between houses. i'm suggesting that if there were enforceable codes, if people showed an interest and were aware, then maybe those who think they own the world just might pay closer attention to those around them.

So Pete? Am I right to assume, that now you're blaming this kid, who played the drums, broke into your house? Or was it the family that moved away that broke in? Your conspiracy is......

The son with the drums did it!
(I'll swing by on my way home from work today and pick up my check, thanks Pete)

Lucky for me I have really nice neighbors all around me. What I can't stand are the young teens driving with their stereos blasting, some of them are much worse than any harley driver. There is a kid who drives a Nissan with his stereo so loud that I can feel the vibrations whenever he passes. Why don't cops stop cars like that

I chased off some door thumpers a few weeks after moving in. They were against Bay Bridge Airport and wanted my support. They were totally floored by my response: This is more of a matter of simple respect, there's isn't much anymore. Lights, Dogs, Music, Exhaust, are all very common complaints. Sure, confront you neighbor...... Who wants to bet that your problem would get worse after your talk? R-E-S-P-E-C-T
