We went over to the carnival tonight and while we were standing there we saw everyone running over to Main St. We asked what had happened and found out that a little girl had been hit by a car. Before we left I asked a few of the firefighters if she was ok and they said they thought she was in bad shape. Someone had said that they tried to get her on the stretcher but she hurt to bad from the waist down. This is all hear say. I was just wondering if anyone else saw or heard anything about how she is. It is so upsetting to see a child get hurt.

she obviously didn't look both ways, probably got excited about the carnival, parents weren't watching and she darted in front of traffic.. i hope the driver doesn't get charged.

I wouldn't want them to get charged if they were doing the speed limit or lower. They put all of the kiddie rides up on Main St. Maybe they should've put them in the back away from the road I don't know the story but I do hope she is ok. I do think if the driver that hit her was going too fast then they should be charged. People fly through our neighborhood and I hate it. Kids don't think sometimes. My kids are only allowed in the back yard just to be safe.

Has anyone heard about the little girl? My prayers go to her and her family. Anytime a child gets hurt...regardless of fault...there is still a hurt child and that is always, always sad.

I just found this on the Star's website. It looks like she is ok. I am so glad Girl hit by pickup as she crosses Rte. 18 July 31, 2007 STEVENSVILLE — A 13-year-old Centreville girl was hit by a car as she crossed state Route 18 at 9:50 p.m. Friday, according to the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office. Stephanie Lynn Norris was leaving the Kent Island Firehouse grounds and talking on a cell phone when she walked onto the road and was struck by a Toyota pickup truck driven by David L. Hazel, 44, of Chester, police said. Police said a power outage in the area, Norris’ dark clothing and heavy traffic volume contributed to the accident. Traffic was re-routed for a short time. Norris was treated at the scene, then flown to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She was listed in good condition with facial and internal injuries Monday, police said.

cell phones are dangerous. You shouldn't be driving and talking on them, now you shouldn't be walking and talking on them. It causes you to be careless and not pay attention to what is going on around you.
I am glad to hear that she is doing ok. Both families (the injured and the driver) are in my thoughts.
Not to hijack the thread, but tomorrow at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, acquaintances of ours are burying their 5 year old son. The mother wasn't paying attention and (yes talking on her cell phone) as she was backing out of the driveway. Yes....she ran over her son who was playing back behind the car. A Tragedy. Was the cell phone at fault....not really, but it just ads fuel to the fire that people do not pay attention to whats going on around them when they are talking on the d**n phone.

The cell phone was not at fault, but it has been said time and again, and this has happened, time and again, that folks with large SUVs, who have small children, should physically walk around their vehicle to ensure that no one is behind them or hidden in their blind spots. A tragedy, true, but one that can be prevented if a little common sense is used.

Well, here's the kicker...she didn't run over him with an SUV, she ran over him in a mustang convertable....Top was down even......

einebierbitte I am so sorry for all of you. We burried my husband's best friends 2 yr old son. A neighbor shot both of them though. My husband friend is alive but still has the bullet in his head. That makes me want to cry. I always make sure that I can see my son over on our grass before I put my truck in drive. I am very paranoid about anyone being around my truck. I do have a big SUV but I am very aware of everything around me at all times. I don't notice blind spots because I make sure that no matter what I can see every angle before I move. Again you are in my thoughts

Sorry for the loss here, and the hurt girl.
Some of you need to get off your horse.
Please get OFF the SUV kick. It doesnt matter what you drive, a distraction is a distraction. Be it a phone, the radio, coffee, makeup, newspaper, RUBBERNECKING, noisy kids, a dog, nagging spouse, WHATEVER it is, it's up to the driver to be in control and not distracted whenever they are behind the wheel, WHENEVER. IF more people did this there would be a LOT less traffic issues.

About a month ago there was a story on one of the nightime shows about kids getting run over in their driveways. They called it something like the "bye bye syndrome" that little kids have whenever they see their parents going bye bye. The children see their parents leaving and immediately run after them because they don't want them to leave or they want to go with them and the parents don't see them and they run over them. They showed some parents that experienced this awful tragedy and I think only one of them on the show was driving an suv.

That is the kicker Bitte. A Mustang, and a convertible to boot. But as I mentioned, and Checy reiterated, when you're the drive, you are responsible. Lose the distractions. Don't answer that cell phone unless it's hands free, and an important call. Too many drivers on our highways today, with a cell phone glued to their ears, become oblivious to everything around them.

We were taught in drivers ed years ago to always walk around your car before you get in and drive off. Are they not teaching this anymore? You never know if someone or something is around the car that you don't see by just getting in the driver side. Not just kids playing behind the car but even glass bottles that may have rolled under a tire in public lots, ketchup packets in restaurant lots, pets, etc...

If you can't drive while talking on a cell-phone, I question your ability to drive period.
Talk about distractions, maybe that should be part of the driver's test....driving while distracting or disturbing things are going on. You morning commute or drive to the store isn't always going to be distraction free. Learn to deal with it and keep your focus where it needs to be.

I see lots of posts about driving with cell phones, but the based on the article, it wasn't the driver on the cell phone. It says the girl was talking on the cell phone when she walked into traffic. While drivers do have to be alert, pedestrian safety also requires a little attention on the pedestrian's part, too!

I don't know exactly what happened. I was by the accident after it had just happened. I do have to say that when I went through Main St. I dropped my speed down to almost nothing because it was so congested through that area. You never know when someone is going to walk out or even back up out of a space. There was just so much going on. I made sure that I was at low enough speed to stop even suddenly if I needed to. I don't know how fast the truck was going but I did see other people that didn't slow down enough.
Again.... I don't know the actual facts of the driver's speed or the girl's actions. I am just glad that she is ok.
