How is everyone doing during this years drought? My lawn is a not so nice shade of brown, the electric bill last month was $300, but I didn't realize that it was this bad:
Senator Cardin Surveys Drought on Eastern Shore: August 07, 2007 (Salisbury, MD) -- Senator Benjamin Cardin took a field trip, literally on Monday, to Eastern shore farms suffering under the drought. He tells WNAV news you almost have to see it to believe it. Senator Cardin says some farmers may not be able to fully recover. Some may give up entirely. Senator Cardin believes the region will qualify for the assistance. The governor requested a drought disaster designation from the Secretary of Agriculture a few weeks ago. It allows for low interest loans to cover the losses. Meanwhile, Ben Cardin is opening a field office in Salisbury. He says he's committed to having a strong presence on the Eastern Shore. The first-term Democrat says Lee Whaley, who will head the office, has the knowledge to deal with the area's issues of concern. Cardin will be on hand for a ribbon cutting and reception, Saturday morning at 10:30.

We are really struggling to keep our plants and flowers among the living but I had no idea it was so bad in other areas of the state!

I'm thinking about doing like they do in Arizona, pea gravel my whole yard. Water is getting so scarce, the deer are eating leaves off of my Japanese Maple in the front planter - in 5 years they've never touched the thing (I guess it's related). Getting so bad the wildlife in our neighborhood are hanging out at my neighbors in-ground pool - wearing bathing suits and sipping margaritas

Its sad to see the corn just die....I don't however mind not having to mow my grass. My son and I have been living in the pool. I make sure my bird bath is full every day...We even had a Red Velvet ant aka Cowkiller Wasp in our pool the other day because she was so thristy. My electric bill was almost 400.00..ahhhhhh!!!!!! Have they put up a water restriction yet? Barb

I know last week from Queenstown north they got like 2 inches of rain while Grasonville and the Island didn't get a darn drop! Weird, I know that!

It's amazing how often that happens. I come off the bridge and it's pouring down rain. I race down Rt 8 to get home to close any windows and the sun is out. I tell my wife the rain is coming, but it never does. Strange!

I'd say the drought is over. Too much rain now everything is flooded.

But nothing like the look, and smell, of a freshly mown lawn.

Well, it's out to cut the new green grass compliments of our rain! Yeah!!!
Actually, it's been a tough summer for all of the locals that have a grass cutting business. I'm sure they are glad for the rain also.

Just let the dogs out and took a moment to really look at our "lawn". There is a fine layer of green coming up in the vast array of brown! ;D

Not cutting 'til Sunday. After the sun today and tomorrow it's going to grow fast... cut today, it'll look like it needs it again Sunday.
Anyone else here notice how many people skin their lawn when they cut it? I mean I've a neighbor who's grass couldn't be 1" when he's done. Scalped as low as the mower deck will go.

And that's really not good for a lawn. May be good for a golf course, but not a lawn. Think one and quarter, to one and half inch is the healthy size of a grass blade.

haha - I cut mine as high as whatever mower will allow. Right now I'm at around 4" I think. Looks thick, healthy, fewer "weeds" and takes a pattern well.
["weeds" because grass is a weeds, too <- I hate the stuff]

I agree matt. Have weeds in my yard too, but they're a vibrant green, and blend well. And I don't bag my clippings, because the clippings are a source of food for the lawn. Excellent fertilizer!!

I'm just glad my lawn is getting back to a nice healthy shade of green and doesn't 'crunch' when I walk on it!
