With traffic now getting totally gridlocked both ways east and west on Saturdays, what's your secret to getting around the Island and Grasonville?
I see the politicians want to have an overpass around Shamrock Road and also to connect Habor View to Thompson Creek Road. Seems to me the two mentioned ideas will only fill up with beach goe'rs and comer's.
Rt 18 is totally locked up during this time, it's a mess.

That was a mess. We went to the QA County Fair and it was as if we were going 60 miles to go 10. I don't know why there are signs on the west side that say that the access roads are not for bridge traffic, but all we get are the ridiculously goofy "50 is Swiftest" signs.... As for getting around, to avoid the traffic on 18 into Stevensville I go through the Acme parking lot and back out, then down Elementary, and across to 8 down by the nursery. It might not save a lot of time, but at least I'm moving...

Sorry, I'm not giving up my secret so everyone can follow me and clog it up too. Kinda like the CRAPITAL posting certain shortcuts on the paper...DUH!

At this point, unfortunately I've started to accept it. I sit in traffic everyday, whether it's trying to to navigate the island on a Saturday, or coming home from Annapolis and sitting in traffic at the Severn River Bridge.
It still sucks really badly, but I've come to expect it during the summer as we all should have by now. It's only going to get worse if something isn't done soon.
Oh, and as far as changing the signs to restricting non-local traffic off the back roads, I think that's a bad idea. If you're going to restrict non-local traffic, then you better have officers enforce it. We all know right now, that it would never get enforced. I personally think that our Sheriff's Dept. has bigger fish to fry. I'd rather see them worrying about bigger things, than worrying about non-locals taking the back roads. BTW, how would you even enforce this???
But here is the biggest reason it's a terrible idea. These are public roads, anyone has a right to travel on them, whether it be for visiting and supporting our businesses or just to take a more scenic route. Our local businesses seem to thrive when traffic backs up occur. Trying to scare people off of RT. 18 doens't do any good for our businesses.
Like I said at the beginning, traffic tie ups suck, no other way to put it. If we don't get a plan in place to fix it soon, say hello to Annapolis East!

Bad for business? Beach traffic isn't passing through here to bring business, keep them on 50 as much as possible.
Know when to go where is half the game.

Bchevy,
Beach traffic certainly doesnt hurt our local businesses. Beach traffic stops at our gas stations, eats at our dining establishments. That is supporting our local businesses. Next time theres a traffic tie up take a look at how busy it gets at local restaurants and so forth.

My secret....Leave early, come home later....or better yet, stay at home!!! I, much like the guest poster, have resigned myself that "sitting in traffic" is just a way of life around these here parts....".

It is very sad, that I too, like the others, have resigned ourselves to sitting in traffic, and have come to accept a 3 hour commute, to go 40 miles, is perfectly acceptable. :-(

I know that the traffic situation was one of the main reason why my wife, me and the children moved to Centreville a few years ago. We kind of felt like we were prisoners in our own house.

This is nothing new, just raising it's ugly head once again.
The 70's and early 80's were grid lock after grid lock. Only the elimination of traffic lights on 50 and the new Narrows bridge helped solve the then problem. We need, at least 2 more lanes each way on 50 and a new bay crossing system. Cheapest, I'm told, would be a tunnel.
A service road over Cox Creek was also looked into in the 70's. Environmental problems nixed it then. What has changed?

cesspool
btw--traffic is backed up what?--every day now??--when they are changing lanes on the bridge, i suppose? 50, the back streets. does anyone ever look on this side of the bridge to see how the island becomes paralyzed. why are they changing lanes at 2 pm? there can;'t be that much traffic going eastbound at that hour, can there? when i used to pick my kid up in annapolis, i'd often get stuck in it both ways. i don't know if their timing is way off, they take too long to effect the change. or they just don't give a rat's behind, but this is getting stupider and stupider. thank goodness i don;t commute every day any more. my sympathies to all who do. yuk.

I agree! And just think, they are still pondering where to put the next bridge!

Looks like it's full speed ahead with the Thompson Creek road work.
