2010 INTERNATIONAL BEACHCOMBING CONFERENCE
Calling all coastal lovers, history buffs, treasure hunters, consummate beachcombers and people who just want a weekend of fun and relaxation at the 2010 International Beachcombing Conference, November 12-14, University of Delaware’s Virden Retreat Center in Lewes, DE. (Last year it was at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Annapolis...)
Leading beachcomb and sea glass authors and experts, biologists, archaeologists, and geologists share their expertise via lectures, workshops, artifact ID sessions, and beach arts classes. The lead topic will be on Shipwrecks and Identifying Shipwreck Artifacts. Other lecture topics include Beach Biology; Black Glass and Rum Runners of the 18th century; the Archaeology of Beachcombing; English Sea Glass; and Miocene Era Fossils. Field trips to area beaches and workshops on beach photography, shell art, and sea glass jewelry are also included in the weekend festivities as well as a Holiday Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Bazaar, which will be open to the general public.
Speakers include Dr. Deacon Ritterbush (aka “Dr. Beachcomb,” author of A Beachcomber’s Odyssey) sea glass experts Richard LaMotte (Pure Sea Glass) and C.S. Lambert (Sea Glass Chronicles), geologist Margaret Carruthers (Beach Stones), and shell specialists Chuck and Debbie Robinson (The Art of Shelling). Journalist Pam George will be there to discuss findings from her book, Shipwrecks of the Delaware Coast: Tales of Pirates Squalls and Treasure.
