We had "cash for clunkers" to boost the car industry. We had "First time homebuyers credit" to boost home sales. Now we have the hands-free law to boost bluetooth sales.

One of the things I have been thinking about are laws prohibiting the use of earphones while driving..
Has anyone seen a clarification on this law vis-a-vis hands free?
Best regards, BC

well if you are just now getting yours... let me tell ya... i went to get mine on Tuesday & was in annapolis so went to staples - sold out unless i wanted a $130 one & i didn't (too cheap)... then went to place in mall... same thing... finally went to t-mobile (my provider) and they were almost sold out - but was able to get one for $39.99... so because of the law, i've noticed that retailers are having a hard time keeping up with demand...

I have a speaker on my phone. Just open it up and it comes on and start talking into it. I'm not buying any ear phones....blue tooth or anything else Then again, I really don't answer my phone when driving unless I think it's really important. Otherwise, they can leave a message and I will call them back.

I think all this hands free law is BS. Really think about it, its not your hand holding the phone to your ear thats the distraction, its the conversation that you are having and not concentrating on the road. Most people don't drive with their hands on ten and two. You still have to pick up your phone to go through your contacts to dial. This law will not change any thing but put a TON of money in the cell phone providers pockets.

my bluetooth and/or phone has that voice command feature... i'm actually liking it - never thought i would honestly! always thought it was silly... but i just hit the button & say ... Call _______ and it asks me if i meant __________ and i say yes & it dials... never have to touch my phone! and i have to say it humors me how it pronounces some of the names....

Secondary offense is BS.......Anything over the speed limit is an offense. Failing to use your turn signal is an offense. Etc........ Question? The burden of proof is on the accuser. If you're not on the phone, but the cop said you were. Who is the judge going to believe? Are you in violation if you use your phone for a 911 emergency call? If you are on the phone, but deny to the cop that you were, does he have the right to confiscate the phone to check your calls? If you hide the phone can he search your car? Is it just as dangerous for the cab driver, the truck driver, and others who talk over the radio with a microphone? How about the cop who is typing on his computer while he is driving?.....This law is unnecessary, and will be abused just like the seat belt law. Revenue is the game, and not your safety.

Hard for me to admit this, but for once I agree with Pete.. except for the turn signal thing.. the law is not clear on this one.. anyhow..
Studies have also already shown that people will still text and use their phones while driving.. the unintended consequence is an increase in accidents since people will try to keep their phone lower in their laps so passersby (police) cannot see them texting or dialing.. taking their attention further away from looking out the windshield..
I wish the bureaucrats would just leave us alone.. my kids and my friends kids survived just fine bouncing around in the back seat of the Chevy without a govt approve child safety seat..
