This is something that I really don't understand, but why are there so many Steelers fans here? I would understand if they played closeby, or if someone is from the Pittsburgh area, but other than that why be a fan of a team that has no connection to this area? The same goes for Dallas, or any other outside team as well. Thanks.

Rich..My opinion is: When Maryland didn't have a football team...people found other teams to root for...some didn't like the Skins because they were Colts fans before...so they picked a bordering state and rooted for their team...a team not too far away so they could still go see a game if they wanted too. A lot of people probably picked the Steelers over the Eagles because they had a good record. I was a Redskins fan only because Maryland lost their team...but now I am a complete Ravens fan because that is My home state team...But this is only my opinion... GO RAVENS

well, here's an answer that won't answer your question.
i'm not from here, so i don't feel a need to root for the ravens because of that (although i do, depending on circumstances). nor am i from pittsburgh. but i love them. i also love buffalo (really). and i'm not from buffalo. i'm grew up in nyc, and i root for the jets, depending, and for the giants--really depending. i've spent time in new england, so i root for that team... depending.
i started with buffalo and pittsburgh during the 70s, when the bills had oj and the steelers were a powerhouse. during that decade, i was living in west berlin for most of the years, so i listened on the radio and occasionally was able to watch on tv.
so i kept rooting for them. pittsburgh has had great teams, great players, great seasons, and have been a lot of fun to watch. has nothing to do with disliking the ravens (or the colts, for whom i also used to root, occasionally), but this weekend, after 40-some years, i will be rooting for the steelers. (the ravens haven't even been in existence that long). on another week, if the ravens play, say, cincinnati, i will be rooting for the ravens.

There are lots of Steelers fans EVERYWHERE, not just here. Additionally we have a lot of PA transplants. And of course if you don't like the Ravens it's easy to like the Steelers since they are our rival. And then naturally you get the bandwagoners who follow them because they have been successful over the years (see Yankee fans, Duke fans, etc)
Same deal with the Cowboys. If you grew up in the Washington area and you don't like the Redskins, it's easy to latch on to the Cowboys. Also, as above, they have been successful and have a certain "mystique" about them with the whole America's Team thing, so that plays into it too.

my personal reason - in all honesty, when i was little (think like 6ish) my dad was a HUGE skins fan & just to annoy him - i decided i liked the cowboys... Then as i got older, I really started to watch & understand football, i determined that I really like the cowboys and the rest is history... i love 'em when they are awesome & even when they are sucking... i get mad w/ them yes - especially this year because there is too much darn talent on that team for them to be making the stupid mistakes they have made this year - but still love 'em...

I am not from here!! But as others have said, no matter where you go you are prolly going to find a good mix of fans from all the NFL teams....
Imagine my surprise when I walked into a bar in Tulsa Oklahoma and the first thing I saw was a big ole fathead of a Raven's player...Yuck!!! I was like...Darn...thought I was home...in the middle of Dallas Territory! LOL!!
I have been a big fan of Dallas for as long as I can remember, basically all my life... Grew up in Texas and Oklahoma and football is a staple, while most of you were learning your ABCs in Kindigarten we were being taught the basics of football.....
No matter if they win or lose, I love my team!! No matter where I live or visit, I have no problems representing my team!! I have learned to ignore all the stupid chatter and "omg original slurs" from those who have a distinct dislike, its your opinion, doesn't matter to me, much like my thoughts about your team doesn't matter to you!
Bottom line at the end of the day one team wins, one team loses, only two go to the superbowl, and not neccisarily does the "best team" always win..... Especially this season, which is very exciting, cause you just don't know what's gonna happen!!! "Any Given Sunday"!!
But there are a lot of Steeler Fans around here, but then again, Pennsylvania isn't that far from here!!!
By the way my grandson has become a 4th Generation Cowboy Fan!!! Between my family and DH's family... we are a Cowboy Dynasty......... Sometimes you just don't choose... You are born into it... (you may try and cheer for someone else, but you always come back!!) LOL!!!

The reason you have Steeler fans everywhere, is years ago when the Steel mills starting closing down, people left PGH by the bus loads looking for work across the country trying to feed their families Back in the day, PGH was sort of a dreary town with everything closing up and unemployment ski rocketing. I left PGH when I graduated college in 96, and could not find a good job in PGH, so I went to Maryland. Steelers fans in general are at the top of best traveling teams.
I also feel this will happen in time with Detroit Lions and automotive industry. You will start seeing Detroit fans popping up across the US, as the same reasons as above.
Just my opinion.
