I heard that Meighan's is closing and Hemmingways is opening Lola'sin it's place this August. Is this true?

That would suck! I was told, though, that it isn't the case. Meighan's is to remain in place, though Hemingways (Lola's? ) will likely be trying to remove them in the future. Anyone hear differently?

I was told this by the bartender at Meighan's when I was there last week. I'm bummed too.

What?! They told us a while ago that it wasn't going to impact their business; that they were safe for at least a while (as in years, not months).
That sucks. Meighan's is the only reliable place on the Island to go for good, clean, "bar" food, even if the new Glen Bernie/Bowie/Crofton/Baltimore transplants have started to find it lately.
That's a serious bummer if it's true.

It's true. Hemmingway's, or more correctly, Steve and Biana Arentz, have raised the rent so high that they are forcing Meighan's out. Once again the little guy looses. The last day is TBD, support them while you can.

Well, then... I'll have to ask some delicate questions when we go there next time. Anyone heard if/where Meighan's will be able to relocate?

Meighan's has been looking into many avenues of relocation since the landlords have been giving them the run around. Nothing is concrete yet, but other avenues are being investigated.

What is happening with Hemingways?

Seems it's over for Meighan's. Sadly, they're closing their doors - or already have. They said on Friday that Sunday (07/30) was their last day. We'll be boycotting Hemingways and Lola's indefinitely as well as whatever ends up in the current Hemingway's location. Hopefully Meighan's finds a new location.

I have been hearing a lot on these boards about the goods and bads of local restaurants but have never eaten at Hemingways. What is it like? 1. Expensive 2. Poor, slow, snobby service 3. Small protions for the big price MY opinion, from MY experience.

Meighan's WAS in the lower floor of the building at the Castle Harbor Marina; it closed on Sunday, 7/30.
Meighan's was an Irish Pub with good beer, good food, fun staff, and good music. It was a very friendly, comfortable, and fun place to get a meal, listen to music, or just talk with friends. For those of us who spent time there, it will be greatly missed.
It is hard to believe a place like Meighan's will disappear for good. Hopefully, the owners know just how much people liked the pub. Hopefully, they won't get discouraged by what happened at this location and will find another. Hopefully, we will all be able to go to Meighan's fourth annual St. Patrick's day party in 2007!
(And hopefully, those responsible for taking the pub away from us will be properly rewarded for their actions)

Has anything ever made it where Meighans was? Not that I remember and nothing probably will. Until Four Seasons comes in and makes that area a little commercially viable.

Actually, Meighan's was doing fine there. They got screwed, not because of no business, but because they didn't own the land. It is, IIRC, the first business to survive there; but, it was only through Hemingway's getting screwed, and passing the favor along that Meighan's was put out.
They had a good thing going.
Much as I liked Meighan's, and like seeing other KI businesses survive, Four Season's is not worth it. I'd hate to see that crap foisted on us residents for the sake of a developer and a bunch of transplants that miss the point.

You all seem to be making a lot of assumptions about Meighan's getting screwed. Did you ever stop to think that maybe there are two sides to the story? Maybe Meighan's wasn't the model tenant? Maybe they were way behind on their rent?
Don't make assumptions based on one side of the story.

Do YOU know more than you stated? or do you just like telling people what to do?

Until I find otherwise, I'll "trust" Meighan. Perhaps you know more than you're willing to say. As it stands, I'm more willing to believe Meighan's did get screwed. But then... Perhaps Hemingways bought the building, raised the rent unreasonably, thereby making it impossible for Meighan's to remain current in their lease? While we're making ass-hatted assumptions, let's have fun, eh?

Meighan's did get screwed by the Hemmingway's people (person). They were good tenants that were up on their rent and had a strong business going. I would suggest that anyone who wants to support the local businesses that are good buisness people stay away from Hemmingway's. I know that I'll never set foot in there again.
