Dear |*FNAME*|,
The Spay/Neuter legislation has been filed in the Maryland Senate (S.B.820) and House of Delegates (H.B.767). There are 14 sponsors in the Senate and 56 sponsors in the House of Delegates: This is terrific news!
House Bill H.B.767 will be heard on February 21, 2013 at 1:00 pm in the House Environmental Matters Committee. The legislation must pass in Committee or it cannot be voted on by the General Assembly.
With just one week before the hearing, it is critical to contact your legislators TODAY and ask them to support this important legislation! Use one of our coalition partners to send a letter now, click here.
If your representative is a member of one of the Committees hearing the bills, please send an additional note asking them to vote favorably in committee for the spay/neuter bill. You can see a list of the Committee Members and contact info here.
Why is the legislation needed?
96,000 cats, kittens, puppies, and dogs enter Maryland shelters each year, and 45,000 of them are destroyed every year.
This costs Maryland taxpayers $8 to $9 million dollars every year.
The task force found that Maryland shelters are overwhelmed, resulting in an unnecessary loss of animal life due to shelter overpopulation.
There is a humane and fiscally responsible solution to this tragedy. The Spay/Neuter program will help end this tragic cycle of homeless pet impoundments and euthanasia in Maryland.
