The County will be hosting a Community Outreach Meeting this Thursday 2/28 at 7:00 at the County Planning and Zoning Office to receive citizen comment on the future development of Queen Anne's Property in the Town of Centreville. In addition to a new Courthouse to be built on North Commerce street, the County is proposing an office building and a YMCA on the property that they own across from the High School. The YMCA will cost County taxpayers $4 Million. Here are some links to some recent articles about this issue. Fitness clubs raise concerns about proposed YMCA: www.myeasternshoremd.com/news/queen_annes_county/article_b3092180-7548-11e2-a611-001a4bcf887a.html What Will be the Real Cost of the YMCA?: cta.centreville-md.net/?p=508There have also been letters in Bay Times both today and last week concerning this.

$4 Million well spent! Not everyone can afford the cost of health clubs.

I don't think I would leave IAC but the idea of an indoor pool sounds nice.

Problem here is that it will not be a Queen Annes county YMCA. It will be a Talbot county run YMCA (they've recently changed their name to YMCA of the CHesapeake). YMCA's are not free. Please see their rate schedule here: www.talbotymca.org/membership/ My "couples" membership at my gym here in the county is only $3.00 more and I did not pay a joining fee. Not only will the county be subsidizing this, they will coming into the county to fundraise.

What bothers me about this project is it went from being a $1 million Chesapeake College pool repair a few years ago, which the Commissioners at that time said they couldn't afford, to a $4 million contribution to build a new one.
And the Y will still charge a membership fee. Does anyone know how there membership fee compares to private clubs?

Their individual membership rate is higher than my local club charges plus there is a joining fee.

...and what about the issue of the county subsidizing a business that will compete directly with the local owned clubs.

$4 Million well spent! Not everyone can afford the cost of health clubs. How VERY LIBERAL of you Deep Sea!!! Spending tax dollars for your own amusement when there are plenty of private dollars already invested and potentially threatened by this Government spending on private interests. And you wont personally gain from this either as you will still have to pay your own dues. Private rates will still apply.

Sorry, deep sea, but as soon as I read post 2 I thought "Obviously someone hasn't visited the Y lately". They cost money, about the same as a regular club.

I was thinking it would be a cheap place for young ones to go and hangout. I would really like a place for our youth to go to were it would be fairly safe from drug and with some real adult over site. I understand that such a place would be expensive but I don't want the young ones not to be able to afford the price of admission.
I grew up in a town that had places that the kids could go to after school and in the summer time to help keep youth problems down. Sometimes these places did just the reverse and ended up causing more problems in the neighbor hoods. No simple solutions, just looking for ways to stop/slow the drug problems in Q.A.County?

It would be nice if there was a place for young men to go if they were short on money. Perhaps they might find themselves having a good time. Just hanging out with all the boys.

Someone needs to post a you tube video of the Village People doing YMCA...I tried, couldn't get one to post, not sure what's going on.
Frank, sounds like your cue?

Here is on of the original YMCA videos.
I really hope the county gets a YMCA or a fitness club makes an indoor pool that is for lap swimming. Currently, there is no public indoor pool on this county for healthy swimmers. As a result, I drive to the Riva Road pool. Ironically, I can only use the pool in the winter months since traffic in the summer sucks. This summer I will probably pay $400 for a family pass to Mears point just so I don't have to worry about traffic.

You can join the Kent Island Yacht Club and use their pool with a complete membership to the club and all it's facilities for $480! Plus, I think I saw the "Cop" from the Village People at the club once or twice..
