Yep....a lot of money for no sidewalks, no lights, no sewer, no water, no trash, no paid fire dept. Very little modern infrastructure, minimal fiber optics, but we do get one patrol car for the entire island and lots of weeds on the side of the road.

That's funny.. reminds me of a letter in the Bay Times many years back when a Chicken Necker was complaining about no sidewalks, streetlights, trash service, etc.. and the responding letters all had pretty much the same tone: Move back to Columbia!! But you make a good point. I have been in the county since 1988. (Still a chicken-necker).. I have watched the county budget increase significantly over the last 25 years without a matching growth in population. I don't have the numbers in front of me right now, but it was something like more than doubling the budget in less than 10 years with growth of only about 10%. Hard to understand. But I guess it is expensive to stay in court..

Really? You came here and expected something different?

Wow, been here 20 years! I guess that makes your opinion worth more I guess. Welllll...I been here a bit more than you, not that it matters but you were the one to trot that pony out. What I object to is my tax bill increasing from $900 to almost $6,000 with little to show for it. Oh wait, I guess I need to pay for the schools that all you newcomers/gateclosers need, and the roads you need. FYI, way back before the big immigration around your time, a fair number of the roads here were oyster shell with a little tar sprayed on it to keep the dust down, there was only one high school, no sewers or water in the big developments (Bay city and Cloverfields) so most of the lots were empty. No cable tv either...Route 8 really was a country lane, no lane markers, no shoulders,no traffic. It was real rural and quiet then. However that was then and now is now. I am not one to live in the past but embrace the now and look forward to the future.
