Just a guess: Farmer John wanted to post a (semi-) permanent sign but what you are seeing now are "temporary" signs. It's possible that these are only allowed from Friday evening to Sunday evening. It's also possible that these aren't really legal but aren't worth the trouble of removing.
Doesn't make it right and doesn't make it fair but might explain what's going on.

Yes, you are allowed to post temporary signs on public property from Friday sunset to Sunday sunset. This is due to a loop-hole in the law paid for by our friendly home-builders and realtor associations so that they can post all their direction signs and "open house" signs all over. I'm sure your're referring to the influx of Politial Signage though. I believe anyond can post political signs 90? days prior to elections. The majority of signs you are seeing now are from businesses and farms who are posting the signs on the edge of their properties supporting the candidates they feel will best support and protect their interests. I'm not sure who acutally posts the signs, the business people or the political staffers, but the business if fully aware of the signs that are posted on their property so it's not like these political people are just running around posting signs on other peoples property.

It's a violation of the law to advertise on public property without a permit.Stopping on a controlled access highway such as RT#50, except for an emergence, is a violation of the traffic laws. To put up a sign you must stop first. High gasoline taxes help pay for our highways. Our tax dollars should not subsidize private business, nor should they be above the law. The nativity scene and the Ten Commandments are forbidden on public property, but real estate & political signs are condoned. Where are we headed?
