I just wanted to say that I am getting a little more than tiffed at the people and the politicians talking about growth on Kent Island. When my family moved here 13 years ago we were well aware that there was not much in the way of shopping and entertainment on the island. We were attracted to the open spaces and small town atmosphere and the beauty of the island. We fully understood that we would be going to either Easton or Annapolis for movies, shopping etc. The people who move over here and then complain that we need this that and the other really get to me. If we were lacking all of these things that you desire, why did you move here? Was it just to complain and try to change our way of life, to try to turn Kent Island into a mini Annapolis? With the elections upon us the politicians are all running around yelling that they are for smart growth. What is smart growth? I think its definition would vary from person to person. I think that each politician should define what he or she means by smart growth so that I have a clear picture of who and what I am voting for. I am not totally against the idea of a movie theater or teen center or a bowling alley. I just don't think we need to destroy more land to do it. We have plenty of space not being utilized already, like the old outlet center. Soon we will have a big empty spot that used to be Safeway. My kids are safe and happy. My car sits in the driveway unlocked and I am never afraid to go out after dark. If you want the convenience of living in a metropolis move to one.

I agree that growth is esential to all communities. Without growyh comes stagnation and death. Developers look for high growth areas with the most profit because it takes so long to get permits to do anything. If you had to tie your money up for years at a time to build anything, you would go where the money goes, which right now is q.a. county. If the commisioners keep shunning them they will go somewhere else and everyones property values will drop. Balance between the two is all that is needed. Bull headedness does not help anyone.

Stagnation is not the same as heavily controlled development. heavily controlled development does not bring "death"... the area could, and should, be preserved where it is. We do NOT need large developments along the lines of the Four Seasons project, or those down Route 8, or Claiborne Woods style, the darn Wal Mart, or even the "new" Safeway. We've got enough commercial space without creating more dinosaurs.
"smart growth" can mean many things but at its heart is development providing no more and no less than the community feels it needs. Most people on Kent Island do NOT want their commissioners in Centreville using them or their area as a sacrificial lamb for QA County. Most people in the community are opposed to the developments cited above. Therefore, our commissioners and planning board d**n well better get with the program.
Elections are coming. Oust the incumbents. Forget all the "party" and label (liberal/conservative) crap - it's nothing more than divisive rhetoric meant to keep those in office, in office. I think nothing could be better than top to bottom house cleaning at all levels of government.
"Growth" should be no more than occasional development to provide specifically the resources and services the community needs. Examples would be the new fire station and medical center, the Chesapeake Bay Business Park (including Terrapin Park), the schools (maybe), and smaller residential (not tract McMansion) developments.

I agree whole heartily with your assessment, it's the urbanization of America. Unfortunately the Governments can't even control Illegal immigration, (even at war) how than can you expect legislation to slow down a legal urban sprawl? I get upset every time I drive on the Island with all the congestion. Where did they all come from anyway? By the way I cannot find my first post (I spelled Greensboro wrong) can anyone help me find it? It was about much the same subject, and "Glen Burnie" chicken-neckers... OOPS, a Chaplain shouldn't use names like CHICKEN-NECKER it is insensitive; however on the other hand I think it sounds better than BULLIPPER... Forgive me Respectfully,

It's about time there was some decent one liners on this forum.
By the way - on growth, I've stated my opinion, that some, but not all chains would improve the overall shopping and dining experience and some growth is healthy and inevitable. Using existing buildings and facilities is right on - the old Safeway could be a fine place for a theater. The condemned buildings at the corner of Rt. 18 and Dominion Rd were finally removed and that site would be a fine place for anything new.
My standard line is that it's wrong to stroll into the gates of paradise and slam the gate shut behind you.
Standing by for rebukes!

I wish I could post the pictures I have that showed what Kent Island looked like 30 years ago. Growth is unavoidable, lets make the best of it. Lets see, if Kmart parking lot wasn't there where would all the Cruisers go. If the Kent Narrows outlets weren't there where would ARF go. If all the restaurants, fast food restaurants included weren't there where would everyone eat. More people moving here means a bigger populated area. Supply and demand or is it demand and supply.
