I'm not sure why Rt 50 needed to be paved again, but I hope the ramps get repaved as well. The drop-off from Rt 50 is ridiculous in some areas. Coming off the bridge, you drop onto the ramp for Rt 8, and then hit the crest getting on going south. This makes driving the motorcycle on the island more dangerous everyday. I could have suggected a lot of other roads in worst shape than Rt 50 that needed repaving.
Also, has anyone else noticed there is one grate near the top of the westbond span, center lane where the bridge seems to have shifted about 1 1/2 inches. When you hit that on bike, it feels as if you have run off a curb. I hope they fix that this winter!

Getting onto 50W from the traffic circle (Castle Marina Rd) has a nice bump too.
It's bad enough these problems were created in the first place, but it's inexcusable that they have been left this way for so long. Someone is going to get hurt. Someone, motorcyclist or car driver, is going to lose control crossing these drop-offs and cause a serious accident.
It wouldn't take that much to smooth these things out. I've been around long enough to see these repaving jobs done where there was some care taken to do the job right. It seems like these days there isn't any thought given to doing a job right, just doing it fast and cheap. And in this case, it isn't all that fast either.
Good luck with your motorcycle. I hope it isn't you that gets into a wreck because of this.

I am on the verge of seeking legal councel to either write a letter on my behalf to the State or to sue the state if god forbid I haver an accident on the motorcycle due to these ridiculous drop offs. The one from Route 8 getting on 50W was at least tolerable as I could ride it out beyond the ledge, now they have smack dab in the middle of the lane! This is a serious problem.
And as a side note, why not spend that $ on fixing Main Steeet/18 through Chester instead of paving 50 AGAIN. It's not like they are adding a lane or something to ease the traffic burden on 50. I usually try to have faith that the traffic engineers know what they are doing, but in this case I seriously doubt it.

The Rt8 - 50W ledge caught me off guard this morning as well. It was difficult to handle in a car, I can just imagine what it would be like on a bike. Immediately at the bottom of the ramp at the beginning of the merge area, diagonal across the lane and about two inches high: there isn't much they could do to make it worse!
If you find an address to write to, pass it along. There may be more people who would like to comment on the (lack of) progress on this project. I know I would.

The ledge was fixed this morning. Now there is a new one at the top of the ramp, but because I was going so slow I could handle it better - once I saw it.

Why not call the District SHA office and just ask them about it and calmly voice your concern? When 50 was a mess, everyone cried that it was ignored because it was on the shore... now they fix it, and everyone cries our back roads are ignored because we're the shore... And, yes, I ride, too. Awareness and care handled the ramps on numerous occasions around the Island this weekend. I'm happy 50's getting some maintenance.

Awareness and care handled the ramps on numerous occasions around the Island this weekend. I'm happy 50's getting some maintenance. Or, write a letter so that my concerns are documented. A phone call is one way of handling the situation, but without any documentation I wouldn't expect any action. As someone once put it, "if it isn't written down, it didn't happen." "Everyone" is a really big word. In fact, I think I am a part of "everyone." And I, for one, am not crying that our back roads are being ignored. 50 probably needed work and it got it. I am not complaining about that; I'm concerned that the method by which 50 was repaired resulted in a very hazardous condition. It wasn't necessary to leave the road in that condition, it was a choice, and a bad one. Congratulations on your awareness and care this weekend, good for you. But this situation has existed for far longer than this past weekend. This situation changes, sometimes daily. In the past week, there have been three different configurations for ledge on the Rt 8 - 50W ramp. Sure, drivers shold be aware of their surroundings and alert to hazards in the road but at the same time, they should have a reasonable expectation that the highway administration is working to remove hazards, not creating them and moving them around.

Sure makes the morning commute fun though, doesn't it. ;D

How about the "SLURRY" coatings in Bay City and some other neighborhoods? Pretty rough stuff if you ask me..
