In recent months, I have followed the sheriff's race, very closely. I have given a lot of thought to whom would be our best candidate for sheriff. It is obvious that Gary Hofman would be the most qualified for this position, as an insider, he would be able to address current issues that have been raised on this forum. It is obvious that he is a Sergeant in the department, and not the current sheriff. It is unfair to associate him as one of the talked about problems, he is not currently in a position to make the needed administrative or structural changes. I can assure you, he will make changes, and the community will take notice. However, when needed, he has always responded to our community needs, and addressed the issues. I can honestly say, that Sgt. Gary Hofmann, is a well respected deputy, is knowledgeable on the needs of our community, and has worked for us for the past 10+ years. He has been there for us, and I plan on being there for him. What better than have a top notch deputy with a strong background plus is raising a family while working to become our Sheriff. This would be a career move for him, not a double dipping retirement. If we are not happy, we could always make the change in a few years. But you will see, he will be here for many years continuing to protect my grandchildren, your children, and our community. Thanks for trusting my experience! Vote Hofmann for Sheriff American Joe

Once again, instead of all the posturing, how about telling me what he plans on doing differently? No more, he'll do more with less. I heard that the last election. Rhetoric doesn't work anymore!

I am new to this website. I have read through many of the comments posted on many of the different topics. I am not pulling for one Sheriff canidate or the other because I believe the right man will win in November but I do read the paper and I am following the Sheriff's Race. I read in the Bay Times article a few weeks back that Mr. Rhodes is going to take the Sheriff's Department in a new direction and not focus on Traffic Enforce and instead focus on Drug Enforcement. I have read a few comments on the drug problem and I do believe it is a serious problem but I see and read Time and Time again.... speeding speeding speeding... Mr. Rhodes are you telling us you are not going to focus on what we the community deems important and switch it to what you think is important.?? Just food for thought.. So I ask each of you Mr. Rhodes and Mr. Hofmann please just listen to what the community wants and not what you deem as important.

Here we thought this was going to be a nice, clean race. Let these candidates run this very important race based on facts and qualifications.
After the last election all candidates should know that you will cut your own throat with "back door" politics.
It comes to only one question and one question only. Clearly, Mr. Hofmann is the only one who has the police background. Why would we elect a retired DNR Officer as our sheriff??? Please do your homework. Mr. Hofmann clearly is the best and only choice! He is not making appearances this year because of an election. He has always been in the communities faithfully for the past 18 years. He is the future of this county for our children and families.
They are both great men. Do not let a family name sway your decision. Gary Hofmann is at this point the only qualified candidate. He is the only one that has been an active police officer enforcing all aspects of the law. Great, Mr. Rhodes worked as a DNR Officer. What does that have to do with running a real police agency? Think....Vote for the right man. The same one who has been in your community for the last 18 years. Think about the one, you as the public, have always been able to approach and depend on. There is a definite reason this candidate is so well liked. They all know him because of his consistent exposure in our county for such a long period of time.
This is his full time job, not a retirement job. This is his life and the future of his family. This is not a position to office in which he will sit and wait until he is ready to finally retire. DO NOT make the mistake of hiring a man who has no policing background.

Concerned apparently has no idea what he's talking about. To imply that a DNR Officer is not a real police officer or DNR is not a real police department is something only an uninformed person would say. DNR police are state law enforcement officers that have statewide jurisdiction and authority and routinely exercise that authority from enforcing traffic laws, fish and wildlife laws to criminal laws.
Now, lets get to the statement of Hofmann being an active police officer enforcing all aspects of the law. We must be talking about different people. The Gary Hofmann I know has had a touchy feely job as the community police officer for many of the last 18 years. When was the last time he made a drug arrest, a domestic violence arrest, heck when was the last time he investigated a crime? ASk him when you see him.
Now what about running a police department. Let's think about that. Gary Hoffman who has only risen to the rank of Sgt. in his 18 year career. What has he been in charge of? 4 or 5 guys, maybe and community policing. And on the other hand you have Charlie Rhodes, a 30 year veteran police officer that attained the rank of Captain. What has he been in charge of? An entire region of officers, more then the total number of QA deputies and hundreds of millions of dollars when he worked at the Governors office.
I agree with the last statement...DO NOT make the mistake of hiring a man who has no policing background.

Please allow these gentlemen to run their race. They are both 2 qualified candidates and the coutny cannot lose with either one in office.
All the negative comments from both sides will reflect nagatively on both candidates. Both are great men and we cannot lose either way. Everyone please back-off. Go back to basics. Let the public decide....Thts's what elections are for.
Thanks.

Again.....Do your homework...Do you all not realize how much this man has done for this county....He has given his entire career to making this county a better place to live....This county's communities back this candidate 100%. No one can deny this fact!!!! Unfortunately that's what politics come down to. He will prevail because that's what the major majority of this county wants. There is no denying this.
It makes Me so angry to listen to people talk and gab when they have not done their homework.
Mrs. Hofmann owns the business 100% and runs all 3 stores by herself. I am a customer and am there almost everyday and have not seen Gary there in 3 years. Please give her the credit SHE deserves....and as far as we all know she has no grandchildren, could not have written any of these blogs, and I agree that if she does decide to she should, by all means, stand up for this man who has nothing but integrity to offer this county. Who should she support? Who does Mrs. Rhodes support? Enough of the bashing against other family members. That's an all new low. There are children involved on both sides who, no doubt, surf these sights.
Also....Mr. Hofmanns business's have been sold twice... even before this election had been started.
I am also tired of reading the nagative ads. I agree that both are qualified and the right person will be elected. Mr. Hofmann and Mr. Rhodes are both qualified . Let's not beat this issue to death anymore!!!
We have much greater issues that need discussing...

I think that the negative writers are getting narrow minded tunnel vision on this issue with Gary Hoffmann, Would you completely take away income from your family BEFORE you were elected. This should be a topic after the election. Do you expect any of our police officers to live on the low salary that they receive, and not work a second job?. I do not have any idea about his salary now, or what our Sheriff makes, but we have to admire a guy whom works to support his family. I really think that this negative politics some of you are writing about will come back and prove that YOU do need a hard working sheriff. I guess, I am voting for Hoffmann, because, its obvious that he is a hard worker, capable of being a full time deputy and an ethical business leader. Wouldn't it be nice to apply those to our current sheriffs office. Lets be fair, and see what he does after the election, his track record looks prettty good now!

Didn't both candidates say " We look forward to running a clean race" in a recent article. Its a shame that family and friends are compromising the sheriff's race. Maybe some of you should take the advice of the sheriff candidate you are supporting. But then again, one candidate was told to not run negative ad's in the primary. It cost him the support from me. I hope you remember, sometimes the negative blogging and ad's, will give the vote to the other guy! Ask EB, it gave him -800 votes! Please positively support your sheriff, let us know about him, not this whining!
