Making millions on this site...Umm... No, really, gov't worker by day, radio DJ by night. Trying to make a dime on this site. At least beer money. Maybe even Ramon money. Maybe just a nickel. Whatever... Happy 3-day weekend to some of you!

well...let's see what have I done today? I am painting my kitchen so could be called a painter?
I used to be a small business consultant now I am consulting my dogs on how to run an efficient back yard. There are a lot of squirrels out there y'know? and whoa, how to keep it tidy?! too bad there is not money in it! however they ARE going to the woods to do their 'business' on their own. Can I put that on my resume?
Otherwise... I am bored to death, thus the # of posts I post during the week...

Work as an IT puke at WSSC. Hmmmm, Do you know Frank G., Wayne B., or Craig K., ? I knew Mr. G. At WSSC he was the section head of the tele-com guys and moved along to your neck of the woods a while back. Tell him Tracy got let go not too along ago with Craig K. Craig K. If we're talking about the same guy, he's one crazy dude. I didn't deal with him much but when I did, it was hard to keep serious. He was let go in the great IT purge of 2006. He probably knows that the place is an ever-loving shambles. Nobody speeks English. You never know who you're talking to because you can't pronounce their name. He'll tell you. We now have a boss who's a retired navy captain (state-side SW Utility District I think it was). We went from a tree hugging laid back dude that was into everybody being empowered to a command and control skipper that still thinks he's in the Navy. Still trying to place the name Wayne B.

Our group for the most part aren't truly within the IT department. We are what was known a few years ago as a rogue group. We got started almost 20 years ago when WSSC first got into what was then CulNet IDMS. Now CAIDMS. IT bought the IDMS package without a real use. You how the budget thing goes? Anyway, Customer Services, Maintenance Management, and our Permits area were called on to bail out our then, Info Systems Division and come up with a new set of mainframe applications specifications using the IDMS platform. That's where the group that I work in got created. I knew nothing about programming but I was up on all the Customer Service business rules. I was a Call Center Supervisor at the time(for all of you call center geeks, ErlangC to ya!). I always used to say "what if...?" to mangagement because of business needs that weren't incorporated into the first generation mainframe stuff we using at that time. Needless to say... I got drafted.
From there, It's been a long ride. After all the specs were written up, management didn't trust IT to actually fully test the new applications. Again, drafted. A few of us got the picture early that testing doesn't stop when the application does what it's supposed to do. We were told to break it. We did. We were truely MFs in the eyes of the programmer guys. Funny thing is... They're gone and us MFs are still there with a set of applications that completely fulfill their mission, and that's right, on the mainframe.
A few years ago, the buzz was to dump all the legacy systems and go with client/server. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to find anything that will do what the old junk we put together 20 years ago does. Some vendors have wanted to look at our sub-systems to try to replicate them for their products. They didn't want to pay for it so adios.
