O.k. so I didn't care about the scarecrow that someone took out of my yard and tore up Monday night. It wasn't very expensive and Halloween was over. However, now I'm very upset. Got up this morning (Saturday) and saw my daughters bicycle helmet laying next to the mailbox. How did that get there? Oh man.. Did I leave both my daughters (5 & 3 1/2 yo) bike in the driveway last night? I must have. GD it. I'll look around. Found the handlebar streamers in the street. Looked around some more - no sign of them. Called the Sheriffs office. Still waiting...
How do I explain this to my kids?
"Instant karma is gonna get you.."

One of my dreams is to catch one red-handed, just once....

Sleepingdragon: THANK YOU so very much for the offer.
This story actually ends on a positive note. Here goes: Sheriffs Officer Copper showed up about 45 minutes after the call. I explain what happened and he says he'll look around and let me know if he finds anything. Officer Copper comes back about 45 minutes later and has the other helmet and some of the handlebar streamers. He tells me he finds them a few blocks away and that he will keep on looking. In the meantime, I check the neighborhood as well. My wife and I take the kids to soccer (last game of the season) and run a few errands. We are on our way home and decide to check the immediate neighborhood woods. After searching for about 30 minutes we find the bikes! One has had the training wheels torn off but still in good condition. The other had the training wheels smashed and the seat ripped. All in all, not too bad.
Later that evening Sheriffs Officer Copper called and told me that earlier in the day he knocked on some neighborhood doors and relayed the incidents about the thefts. I told him that I found the bikes. We both figured that once the Sheriffs department got involved and the information began to circulate in the neighborhood the thiefs got scared and tossed the bikes.
While I know this wasn't a high priority call, I appreciate the fact that Sheriffs Officer Copper took the time to try and retreive the bikes. I believe that his involvement was directly related to the eventual return of my daughters bikes.
I will call the Sheriffs department and let them know about Officer Copper.
