Washington Post Tuesday, December 12, 2006 Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett yesterday called for an increase in Maryland's gas tax to help fund road and mass transit projects he said would not be possible without a sustained way to pay for them. The suggestion by the new leader of the state's largest jurisdiction to raise the 23.5-cent tax got a tepid response from Gov.-elect Martin O'Malley (D), who sized it up as an " interesting proposal," and state Senate President Thomas V. "Mike" Miller (D-Calvert), who said it could be a tough sell in the General Assembly. much more here... www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/11/AR2006121101296.html

A gas tax increase, at a time when gas is way too expensive? Is this clown clueless? If the state wants to get more revenue they should be working on tourism. Maryland has nice beaches, big cities, small fishing towns, mountains with skiing, and DC nearby. Unfortunately Maryland's image to a lot of the rest of the country is that of ghetto-slum Baltimore, ghetto-slum P.G. county, and NASCAR hillbillies everywhere else. Baltimore has a lot to offer in reality. P.G. is a bust, but the rest of the state can attract tourism if it could only find a marketing image and stick with it. Another way to make some money would be to attract business to the state like Virginia has done. There's no reason for Northern VA to be booming and P.G. is a ghetto. Both are the same distance from DC. Clean up the trash in P.G. and get businesses in there and ca-ching, there's the money.

The problem is- PG and Baltimore (and montgomery) control the whole d**** state and you never get anything done that needs done.
This state needs a MASSIVE audit & house cleaning. there could and would be so much money saved if there were some accountability in spending at all levels of government.
SHA build massive signs over the highway to flash an 800# to report suspicious activities we have phones on the Bay Bridge Ocean city pays for tolls at the bay bridge one afternoon
I have more but those were on top.
there is massive, MASSIVE, overspending just for the sake of spending. Next year's budget depends on this years budget being SPENT- ALL OF IT. There's no reward for saving a dime, a dollar, or $10,000.
Raise the gas tax?
No Way you stupid out of touch Jerk.

Like it or not, slots would be a partial answer.
I'd bet the Gov-elect Marty would love to add the additional tax but though out his campaign, he stumped for not adding to any 'additional burdens on the backs of Maryland citizens'. Think he's man of his word?
From the same article:
"For every penny increase in the gas tax, $30 million to $35 million in revenue would go into the fund that pays for transportation projects throughout Maryland."
IMHO I say B.S. The big mega-projects (ICC and Metro Purple Line) will sap the fund and are located around D.C.
EDIT: i need to learn to execute spell check B4 posting...

Slots revenue would be great. For one year. Maybe 2. Then they would need more money as they would ,have spent all of it, and more. They would certainly over project the slots income, and we'd be right back where we are.
More $$$= More$$$ Needed

Check this out: gazette.net/stories/120806/polia%20s201416_31984.shtmlIt's going to be interesting to see how it all washes.
