I have to agree with Bchevy on thinking that some places are a little ridiculous with all of their high fees and endless rules.
I am all for saving animals, but some of these "non-profits" I have looked at (not here on Kent Island) seem to be more of a profit type of business.
I know it is expensive to care for animals, but some of the rescues seem to have as high of fees as you would pay at a Mall's pet store.
I know organizations want to have animals placed into good homes, so that is why they must screen the people, but why are some of the fees so high? Wouldn't it be more beneficial to keep costs lower in order to get the animals placed faster?

I think most organizations try to keep the costs as low as they can. Keep in mind that you're not only paying for the animal you're adopting, but you're also helping them take care of all the other animals they have. They need to have enough money to pay for medical expenses (often rescues take in animals that need a LOT of medical treatment), housing, food, etc.
