A tough economy isn't causing couples to postpone their wedding, but it is causing most brides to rethink their plans for the ceremony. According to a recent David's Bridal survey, three out of four brides-to-be say they'll be spending less money on their big day than they originally anticipated. Roughly 25-percent of women planning to walk down the aisle note they've trimmed their wedding budget in half, and one in ten brides say they're going to scale back by 75-percent. Just over half of the prospective brides surveyed say they're capping their wedding expenses at 25-thousand-dollars, while 34-percent want their ceremony to cost under ten-thousand-dollars. The top two ways brides intend to cut back are with the food and the guest list, with 45-percent noting they'll spend less on the meal and 45-percent saying they'll invite fewer people. What brides aren't willing to skimp on are the rings or their wedding dress.

I am always amazed by the amount of money people spend on weddings. I know it is a once-in-a-lifetime event (until the next one, haha), but just starting out my husband and I were basically impoverished. My parents put me and my brother through college (we contributed quite a bit, but they paid the lions' share), I graduated in 1985 and my bro in 1986. So, when I went to tell my folks I was getting married in '86, I didn't expect much. Our family, friends and neighbors did the food (for 250 people - I come from a really big extended family), I made 1600 of those little cream cheese pressed mints and froze them, my cousin the art teacher decorated our hall (the AmVets, b/c my dad is a member of the local one), I bought my dress (which I still love) at an OUTLET, believe it or not. Yeah, nothing elegant like a country club, but we had champagne, tons of good food (pit beef and ham, those little puff pastries with ham salad or turkey salad, veggies, etc), a live (local) band, and people kept telling me what a great reception we had; we had fun without breaking the bank. My mom once asked me if I had minded them not doing the "bigger and better" wedding, and I can honestly say that I HAD all of that, and more. But, I don't even want to think about my daughter getting married...

I like to refer to it as my "old-fashioned redneck wedding" but my mom used to get bent out of shape over that. It definitely was a family wedding, and not the first like it in my generation of the family (out of 16 of us grandchildren, I'd bet that at least 1/2 of us had our receptions done by the family/friend/neighbor network!).

I say bluejeans, T-shirt, bare feet, and beer to toast! Keep it simple! ;D Perfectly put Sequel. Islandtech & I have been married 10 years, we had a "simple" wedding. I loved every minute of it & would do it again that way. I don't like the big church weddings.

Sheesh, my husband and I spent about $300 on our wedding, and that included both of our wedding bands!
