I was under the impression that the question was not optional and that I wouldn't be able to renew my license without answering it. It was asked in the same round as the mandatory questions.

WTF AS hard as it is for a legal citizen to get a license, We need a birth certificate for starters, do they need one? I just can't understand the arguement to allow ILLEGAL ALIENS to get a license.......

It's simply another way for Democrat politicians to garner votes. "Hey, we're going to let you get a Maryland drivers license, so remember us on Election Day!"
What makes me even madder is they hand out voter registration forms to these same people. Maryland is well known to these people as a sanctuary state, which is why they flock here in such great numbers. And make no mistake about it, it is entirely the fault of Democrat politicians, period! The Republican minority in both chambers have been fighting this for years, but they don't have the numbers to get the situation corrected.

It appears that this has been ongoing in Maryland, and I'm sure Republicans were in office during those times. So were they garnering votes while looking the other way?

During the last 20 years or so of debating illegal immigration in Maryland, Erlich was the only Republican to have won a statewide election, I believe. While there are pockets of Republican areas in eastern & western MD. the BW corridor has been solidly locked down by Democrats for decades. Montgomery Co probably has one of the largest pools of illegal immigrants in the state (not just hispanic) and a Green Party candidate probably has a better shot there than a Republican.

Maybe it's time for all of Marylanders votes NOT TO COUNT IN A FEDERAL ELECTION! Maybe that would wake up somebody? If we have so many ILLEGALS voting in OUR state, ALL the votes should be DISQUALIFIED until the system is fixed.

I thought the same thing, if you are illegal why are they voting and it counts. WRONG Become a legal citizen of the US and then you can have rights. I bet the politicians wouldnt want it that way though.

Does anyone have links to show that illegals are participating in elections in our state? Maybe I missed the links?
Here are my thoughts: anyone who's not a citizen of our country should not be able to vote in our elections. That seems to be a no-brainer.
Having said that, I'm not necessarily opposed to illegal citizens getting driver's licenses. If they want to respect the law enough to get a driver's license, let them. But driver's licenses should not be used, ever, as a means of verifying citizenship in our country. The purpose of driver's licenses is to identify those who are legally allowed to drive and are residents (legal or otherwise) of a state (and to provide a photo ID). That's it. Nothing more.

funnel101.........If these license holders are illegals they don't belong here in the first place. Why should we be spending our hard earned tax dollars on illegals, and illegal government policies?.....POLICY does not supersede the LAW.

I think it would probably cost more money for the DMV to check whether an applicant was an illegal or not than it would be to just give them the license.

The reason illegals get licenses in MD is because then they have a document that makes them appear legal, thus providing them with a degree of immunity against deportation if they are caught committing a crime. ICE has been cracking down and deporting the illegal immigrants who have been committing crimes in MD. Possession of a drivers license is simply just another barrier in place for ICE officials to investigate past... and in some cases, it is a deterrant to investigation.
What part of ILLEGAL immigrant do people not understand?

i understand that licenses issued to them will look different from regular licenses, so people will be able to tell.

Does anyone have links to show that illegals are participating in elections in our state? Maybe I missed the links? There really aren't any links to show, because some people running the state have zero interest in proving that illegal voting occurs by "undocumented" aliens. (Of course, they aren't really undocumented, they can always get a drivers liscense & voter registration card in MD!!) A perfect example of why this problem exists, and lack of interest in showing its existance surfaced in the recent debate on drivers license. Del. Rick Impallaria, Dist. 7, offered a couple amendments that would have prevented anyone from getting the special license crafted to accomodate illegal aliens from registering to vote via the motor-voter registration process. His thinking is that if a person is unable to prove they are a legal resident for driving purposes, there is obviously a question as to whether that person is a legal resident eligible to vote. These amendments were struck down by Deomcratic Floor Leader Del. Kathleen Dumais of Montgomery County and Democratic Majority Leader Kumar Barve, also of Montgomery Co. I would question why the Democratic Leadership in the House of Delegates feels so strongly about preserving the right of illegal residents to register to vote. Their attitude also goes a long way towards explaining why there are no links or stats to answer your question. If the Democratic leadership in this state wants to preserve the right of illegal aliens to register to vote, you can be absolutely certain they would never allow a serious investigation into how many illegals may have exercised that right.

FWIW, I was asked for an alternate form of ID while going through security at the Denver airport, while my two co-workers (Virginians) were not. I asked why, and was told "Maryland is on their list for alternate ID checks". I'm really glad I live in a state with such a stellar reputation!
