The Derby is today, for those of you who follow horse racing (or even if you don't). What are your thoughts? (And now that the "K-Mart" horse, Mine That Bird, won, who was thinking him? ?)

Obviously, not too many people at 50-1... but the performance of that horse was phenomenal!!
I can't recall ever seeing that kind of burst of speed at that level of racing. I am sure there are people saying that horse had to be drugged..
Awesome to watch, especially from the overhead shot..
Best regards, BC

Every once in awhile we get a front row seat in watching history unfold before our very eyes... What a spectacular race.....
Now a days there is so much scrutiny on the animals that I am sure if there was any hint of drug missue it would have come out by now....
But it was an awesome race.... Woudn't it be awesome if he took the next two races as well...
But I bet his odds won't be 50-1 at the next race!! LOL

LOL Ditto, but I'm also betting he won't be the favorite (it seems there is a tendency to look at a win by a horse with those odds more along the line of "flash in the pan"). I also agree with BC, in that the burst of speed at the end was pretty neat to see. There has also been a lot more scrutiny over the past year over what the horses are "on" now, especially after losing Eight Belles. I think Preakness will be great to watch. I like the fact that it is not such a "cavalry charge" like the Derby. Unfortunately, Preakness is also treated like the least of the 3 jewels, but I like that there are not as many horses in the mix. It's scary with a big group, the chances for collisions, etc. As for the jock, what a trip he was to watch! My husband and I couldn't get over his reaction. He's definitely a "down-home" sort of man. I don't remember him being that excited over his 1st Derby win in 2007, but it was fun to watch him Saturday. EDIT: Oh, and I voted for "other" but Mine That Bird was not my pick; I was looking for General Quarters, a horse from a team with another compelling story. Now it's a toss-up for me between Mine That Bird and General Quarters; two teams that are "everyday people" teams.
