I have to ask, What is a Queen Anne's Couny "Reserve Deputy"? Do they have police powers? I saw a reserve deputy thursday morning sitting in a marked car on the northbound shoulder of Rt. 301 in Queenstown. The Reserve Deputy looked to be like 80 years old and was sitting there like he was working a speed trap. Today at about 11:00 am another "reserve deputy" was flying past everybody and cutting in and out of traffic on westbound Rt. 50 in Grasonville? I wonder if the Sheriff would be happy about that!

How did you know it was a reserve deputy, was it displayed on the car? Reserve deputies (police) in general are sorta like being in the army reserves, you were in and are now out. Most have police powers, usually a certified police officer, may be retired from another agency to help fill in. For what it's worth, don't assume it's Barney Fife.
I didn't know QAC had reserved deputies or do they.

Its a marked sheriff's department vehicle and on the back trunk lid it says "Reserve Deputy" and the roof had a yellow and blue light on the top. The other car I say taht said "Reserve Deputy" on the back was also a marked car without and lights on the roof. The old guy sitting behind the wheel had to be in his mid to late 80's!

probably retirees and / or someone trying to be a police and / or squirrels who can't be a "real police" cuz they can't get through the process for some reason (s)......just a guess.

I am curious, do they do background, criminal checks, ect. or can just any person walk in and be a "reserve deputy" and drive around like they are somebody important? Who is the guy that looks to be 80 years old driving around, what is up with that?

i believe they are retired cops. They assist with programs such as finger printing, traffic control on major incidents. Since they only have yellow lights they cannot pull anyone over. They are just yellow "warning" lights.

I think that the "reserve deputy" driving like a maniac on sunday morning on westbount rt 50 in grasonville need to be talked to by the Sheriff about his driving habits if he has no police powers! And the other one, the old guy sitting on rt 301 like he was working a speed trap need to learn his job description!

adaml......Police powers do not elevate the Policeman to where he is above the law. If he is not responding to an emergency situation, and is not flashing or sounding, he must obey the laws he has sworn to enforce. Cop should lead by example, not arrogance.

I totally agree however, I guess you give a squrrel a "reserve deputy" marked car and they think they are above the law! As to the old guy reserve deputy, I guess he needs to learn that there is a sign where he was parked that said "emergency stopping only", but again you give a squrrel a "reserve deputy" marked car and they think they are above the law. I think it is a waste of tax payers money for the vehicles, uniforms, and GASOLINE!

A friend of mine is a Reserve Deputy, they have to go through the same hiring process as paid deputies and most are ex military or retired cops. Reserves are not paid and they volunteer the same way our firefighters volunteer. They run speed trailers, work carnivals and fairs, provide traffic control etc. and no they do not have arrest powers and they work with hand me down equipment which many buy their own stuff.
Squirrels? I dont believe so as many come from respected police organizations or have extensive military backgrounds. Shame people view them as that as I know my buddy is a pretty decent guy.
As for speeding down the road, if they drive 55 people call the sheriff and complain they are causing traffic jams, if they drive faster, people call the sheriff and complain they are driving like nuts. Lots of people call and complain about everything, it's odd.
He said its really an eye opening experience as he sees how many parents fail in their responsibilty to properly raise their kids and blame their childs actions on others.
Next time you encounter a reserve deputy, you should take a few moments and get to know him/her before you criticize.

Background Investigation, Thats funny, I know of one that has some issues, just check out the states public case search, you would be amazed what you might find out. Might I add thats pretty scary that they are working in a "secure police building" with classified information. As to speeding, I wonder if there was a gps(secret supervisor) installed on the "reserve deputy" car? Heck they are probably driving better vehicles with less mileage than the sworn deputies!

I find it pretty peculiar that you, AdamL, of all people would spot two "Reserve Deputies" in one day, let alone you - a known QAC Sheriff hater. I understand that you and Pete aren't the same person, or at least don't share the same IP address...but never the less, I find it hard to hate on someone volunteering to help the community.

By "know of one" I assume you're referring to a "Reserve Deputy..." In which case, why don't you pester him with the questions you've asked within this thread?

Still waiting for your candidate to come on and answer questions, I guess arrogance is playing a major role!

No one has a monopoly on not being a squirrel. I know plenty of squirrels that go nuts when they have some horsepower under their foot. I'm not calling your buddy one, just saying that his background makes no difference.

I don't mean to call you a liar...but I am. Why does my candidate need to come on this forum to deal with you (Pete's alter ego) when I'm sure he'd be more than happy to do it in person. P.S. - Thanks for the barefoot advice.
