Heard a rumor that there was a speed camera being set up on Rt. 8 near the Matapeake complex (South of 50). Haven't been by there yet to confirm it.

I didn't see anything resembling a camera box yesterday coming through there.

It will be there soon enough, every county has been given an alotment of the wonderful camers. They are maintained by a PVT comp. who takes a lions share of the proceeds. They do all the set up and matinance of these wonderful camers. It was decided last month that a conflict of intrest did not exist bwt the comp and the county so they are now proceding with the install of these wonderful camers. Hit the braks or dump you cash!

My Friends......Every photo taken by a speed, or red lite camera should be public record. I want to see which violators did not get a ticket, and why these violators are above the law......Pete Richter for Sheriff 2010

To clarify...there is no speed camera by Matapeake on Rt 8. Do they plan to... possibly but doubtful.

I think this was started over one of those trailer cameras that flashes your speed at you. NOT the speed CAMERAS that are now legal in md that give you a ticket.... different beast I think.

I hope we get a little American on those cameras and burn them to the ground like our British cousins do. We are, after all, supposed to be about liberty and freedom. Speed cameras should be burned down, destroyed, or otherwise vandalized into non-functional scrap metal as soon as they are installed. It gets awfully dark on our rural roads at night. Just about anything could happen to those camera's when it gets that dark...... Just say'n.

I've heard of the ones in Britain having a burning tire hung over them, but I think a smashed lens, followed by an M80 or a ball of flame into the hole via lighter and Aerosol-can would be easier....if one were so inclined.

there are an awful lot of local speed limit signs that have been shot at for no real reason. As a man who, in his youth, shot at road signs, I can answer that. Its a challenge to hit them while in a moving car, and they make a satisfying "ding" when you do. (no this wasn't MD, it was backroads Missouri)

When I lived in HI, they strarted doing this. Private company taking the photos and writing/mailing tickets.
Turns out that they got paid $XX per ticket they issued. Just a small conflict of interest there. Things got really messy when a lawyer sued the county, and the "photo radar" business was dropped.
You can't make me believe that there is no conflict of interest unless the private firm is paid a flat rate, which I doubt.

I'm not sure where there is a conflict of interests here. The ticket-camera people's interest is in making money and the money comes from issuing tickets so the more tickets the more money and everyone wins. From their standpoint, where is the conflict? Now if their job was different there could be a conflict. If, for instance, their job was not to make money but was to fairly enforce the laws then there might be a conflict of interest if they got paid per ticket. On the one hand they are supposed to be honest and enforce the laws fairly. On the other hand the more tickets they issue the more money they make. Now *there* is a conflict. Fortunately, we don't have a system like that, right?

I agree witht he conflict of intrest BUT it was given the O.K this past June in Annapolis. The comp will be given a fee for every ticket issued. Rt 8 will no doubt have one sooner then later. Although I too have been tempted to "take out" a speed camera I was told by my freind the lawyer, it would give my a fed. record and time in the BIG house. They will move them around if an area becomes less productive. I think rt 8 will be next, I'll drive 50-55 mph and always get passed. If I bring it up to 60-65mph I get people rideing my tail.

I am surprised nobody linked this story. Maryland is seeking extra revenue and the private speed camera companies spent $500K lobbying for a contract. www.thenewspaper.com/news/29/2917.asp If you see orange cones on the road, they probably have a speed camera up ahead.

I wonder if they are putting it near the schools or just south of the schools where the speed limit changes from 40mph - 50mph.

So if the cameras are owned by private companies, what authority do they have to enforce traffic law and collect fines for violations? Is the penalty for ignoring the citations the same as that for ones issued by actual police officers?

Who would be for a camera at any traffic light intersection to catch litter bugs. I have noticed the intersection ashtray at the overpass on Rt 8. It seems cigarette butts dont fit into any catagory when it comes to discarding them.
What of the sign on Rt 8 for littering, has anyone been caught or pulled over for littering?

I would be for a litterbug camera. They need to put one on Irene Way and Victoria and catch the idiots who throw their fast food trash out on a regular basis. I am familiar with the Rt. 8 overpass area ashtray. As far as I know, they still make cars with ashtrays in them. Studies have been done that show the backseat of a car that people smoke in has a higher concentration of harmful cigarette "stuff" than a bar where people smoke.

Can someone post pictures of the cigarette butts and the no littering sign from Rt 8.
Maybe someone can start a thread on general littering, posting pictures of the trash with some type of marker in the background to let everyone know where it is.
This could start a game, the winner with the best worst location voted on by the users of this forum wins.
At the end, compile all the pictures and start a clean up Kent Island campaign.

The speed camers are here / coming they have been challanged and found to be ligit. So get used to them and slow down keep your trash in the car/ truck and follow the LAW. FWIW: the camera is condidered a "tool" of law enforcement. It is pvt. owned and maintained. If you get a ticket I would suggest you pay it and promptly.
