Bay Bridge Rides Not Free Come Monday May 13, 2007 - 12:03pm
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Long before Thursday's deadly crash on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge drivers were afraid to drive across by themselves. However, fearful drivers always had a free service that would get them across the bridge, but starting Monday they'll have to pay.
The Maryland Transportation Authority will no longer provide the service, and will instead have private vendors do the job.
The change is being made so that transportation authority police can their do their real job, helping stranded motorists and keeping traffic moving across the span, rather than assisting petrified drivers.
It's going to cost a $25 to hitch a ride over the bridge if you're in a car, and $35 if you're trying to bike you way across.
The plans to privatize the service were in place long before Thursday's accident.
