Just wanted to get some opinions on the proposed "town centers" in Stevensville and Chester. After reading what the newspaper said about it - I thought it sounded promising. But I want to learn more about the plans.
Does anyone have any info on this? Will it be up for a vote?

I don't believe we need any new town centers. The Narrows outlets already exist and a couple of areas in the ACME shopping center are un-owned. If anything should happen someone should build in those two spaces, and with a little proper advertising they would be great. But there is no sense in building something new if another promising area already exists.

Why aren't the Narrows Outlets buildings being used? I understand that they don't get much beach traffic - but the locals know exactly how to get there. I agree with Native that we should be using existing buildings for new amenities. That way everyone can be happy. Newbies can get the amenities they want, and no new damage is being caused to the fragile eco-system here. Maybe they could even put that Target in there?

Very good point! New construction isn't needed to bring new stores to the Island. I would rather see the Narrows Outlets full than have them stay as they are. You're right, we all do know how to get there. Although sometimes I do miss the turn and have to back down the exit ramp! ;D

The problem with the Narrows is J-Mall.. I wanted to put a business in there but the landlord was impossible to deal with. My gut is they would rather have short leases and go cond one day. Jamall is very hard to deal with.

Below is from the Washington Post. Haven't heard much about this locally. No wonder they're hard to deal with.

Will Douglas Jemal be convicted of bribery, make more money -- or both?
Monday, January 2, 2006; Page D09
Jemal's supporters think he may be guilty of one thing -- making a bad friend in Michael A. Lorusso, the former deputy director of the D.C. Office of Property Management. In September, a federal grand jury indicted Jemal, his son Norman and his leasing director Blake C. Esherick on conspiracy, bribery, fraud and other charges. Most of the allegations involved dealings with Lorusso, who pleaded guilty to bribery conspiracy charges in 2004.
Regardless of the outcome of the case -- all three defendants have pleaded not guilty -- one thing is pretty much certain: Jemal's success as a developer is likely to continue.
He has land he bought this year along the Anacostia River -- not far from the proposed new baseball stadium -- and Jemal talks big of turning what is now a mostly industrial site into something like Baltimore's Inner Harbor. He also has projects in Prince George's County and in several other District neighborhoods.
His trial is scheduled this year.

Jamall is very hard to deal with. I remember when he/they bought the place, it was a big sale pitch that they would make it some sort of Sports Complex? We see how far that went..... No more town centers, we need things to do! See the "Things I'd Like to See" Thread!

I agree Alex (this is Laurie by the way) they are ridiculous to deal with that's why few people want to deal with them to rent.
