Depending on the caliber of the bullet, it is entirely possible that it was a stray shot not even intended for him. As we all know, a bullet can travel as far as one mile before coming to rest if it is unimpeded in its' flight. The fact that it didn't even have enough force to penetrate the siding would lead me to believe that is what it could be.
They will have to determine caliber, the trajectory and then the flight path. They should be able to trace its' point of origin after factoring those things in along with the speed that particular projectile travels upon being fired. I bet its' much ado about nothing. It would still be unsettling, regardless.

If they did indeed hear the gunshot, and not just the smack of the round against the house, then it was close by, and probably a very small caliber pistol round.

Yea, I was working with the "heard the gunshot" on that statement about the possible traveling distance, but you are correct about rifle shots being able to travel much farther. I should have clarified what I was referring to (hey...and it IS in New Jersey....COULD be a couple of handguns around there ) It will be interesting to hear the findings.
