From another thread... I tried Holly's Veg Crab today for lunch - very good! The chicke salad sandwich was very good too! This reminded me that I have never been disappointed at Holly's. One time MrsMule and I had breakfast there and it seemed like it taking a gawdawful long time for our breakfast to come. It turned out that one of the guys in the back decided it was time to change the exhaust filter while our chow was on the griddle. Grunge from the exhaust hood fell onto our stuff just as it was getting done and they had to start over and from scratch. The waitress explained what was going on and said our breakfast was on the house!! No kidding. The manager insisted. Needless to say, that waitress got one helluva tip when we were done.

We had a similar experience. Holly's has never failed to be a wonderful place for us. We were out to lunch one day and I pre-ordered a large bowl of their Maryland Crab Soup to take home with me for dinner later. We all had a wonderful lunch and when we paid our bill, I asked the waitress if I could get my soup (I honestly didn't even notice it wasn't on the check). She looked so shocked and surprised. She explained that she had forgotten the soup order in the lunch rush. I wasn't upset at all. I put myself through school as a waitress and I completely know how a bowl of soup gets lost. I told her no worries and I would just pay for it by itself. "Nope, hon", she said, "This is on the house". I protested, yet she insisted. The soup was delicious at home later that evening and I will always go back there when ever I get the chance. They remind me of family and the way family treats you when you visit. It's very nice. Best I have ever found.

Surprise surprise - they sat us IMMEDIATELY!!!!!! they had a 10 top & put 3 at the counter right next to the table!! AWESOME!!!

Only been there once, and while OK, the menu consisted of much of the same type stuff that I would fix at home. When I go out to eat, I'm looking for something different, or too time consuming for me to make at home. I wasn't impressed, but maybe I hit them on a bad night?

I'm lazy, I would go there to get the stuff I should cook at home but don't.
Everything I've tried has been OK. The Maryland Crab soup is really good and the fried chicken is exceptional!

Well I tried Holly's famous chicken and thought I was eating my moms fried chicken. $10 for a chicken dinner with 2 regular sides seems a little steep to me. They were not busy, food came quick but the waitress, not a young one, was awful. We barely saw her the entire time. The place was no where near busy so it was not like she was tied up with other customers. Next time I want fried chicken I will go to my mom's house, Hardee's or cook it myself.

I'm scared to go into Holly's. I'm severely allergic to all seafood -- even the smell of it can start my throat closing -- and I know they're known for their crab soup.

Well, I may take a lil crap over this one, BUT......... Went to HOLLY'S this morning for the usual b-fast meeting with friends. As usual we were told to sit where we would like. We chose our usual spot, and placed our order. New item on the menu we noticed today was Chicken Fried Steak with gravy. One in our party ordered this. While waiting for our food and holding the usual conversations, I found myself noting particular things about good ole "Holly's". I looked at the blinds on the windows. Covered in dirt, dust, dead bugs and food. Under the table were chicken bones, napkins and a bottle of Ketchup. I thought, maybe a busy night, pretty bad but I had seen worse at other restaurants. I had ordered old faithful - Creamed Chip Beef over biscuits. Our waitress came out and said that they were OUT of biscuits and apologized for the mistake. So as she was telling me this I was thinking "Out of Flour and water" I inquired and she said the biscuit order wasn't in yet. I asked: "Biscuit ORDER? The biscuits aren't homemade here??? She laughed and said "You REALLY think those are made here?? Nope they come in FROZEN and we bake em up. I laughed and shrugged it off. Accepted the change to Toast. So my friend who ordered the Chicken Fried Steak asks me how to make it. I told him chopped steak, dredged in seasoned flour and fried. Pretty easy meal. So out comes the meal and I am asking the waitress about the other "Homemade" items served here. She explains that the "Home Fries" are no more than canned sliced Irish potatoes. They open the can, drain them, and throw it on the grill. I didn't want to even ask about my Creamed chipped beef. I am thinking about a kitchen full of Orange Stouffer's boxes and a bunch of microwaves. So my buddy then asks the waitress "How much extra for the penicillin"? This question kinda threw me for a quick minute, I was trying to rapidly find the punchline in his question. The waitress looked puzzled as well, so he picks up his piece of toast and shows us this fuzzy green mold on his toast!!!!!!! This wasn't the new spot on an old piece of bread. This was full on, total penetration green into black MOLD. My jaw hit the table. It really wasn't, but IT WAS FUNNY as hell. The waitress acted rather embarassed, took the toast and as she was headed back to the "Kitchen" looks back and says "This was from the NEW LOAF"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So now I look down to my wonderful plate of Creamed Chipped Beef - (remember NO biscuits) Over TOAST!!! So now comes the disection of my plate. Piece by piece I am scraping off the gravy and looking for fur. I didn't find any, but it wasn't an easy job to enjoy breakfast. So here comes a new set of fresh toast for my buddy. The waitress apologizes again, and talks for a min. I ask about the recipe for the seasoning for the Chicken Fried Steak. She laughs at me again, and asks "You really do think we make this stuff here"?? She points outside to a Sysco truck behind me and says "That's where our Homemade comes from", the Fried steak is frozen and we just drop it into the deep fryer. I ask about the new Cracker Barrell hurting business, and she looks around at maybe 10 people being served and just laughs and says "It isn't Cracker Barrell we are worried about". So needless to say, this will be our LAST visit to the Good ole' TOURIST TRAP. I did take my son to the Chesapeake Family restaurant (Old Chesapeake Chicken) a few weeks back, with good results. Maybe we can meet there until Nov 15th. We do however still enjoy the Holly's fried chicken. I am just going to hang around out back and peek into the kitchen and see if they are microwaving KFC. Enjoy!!!!!!!!

I have never seen it dirty in there...just old looking...I love their sausage...I did have a horrible waitress the last time I was in there...so bad that a waiter came over and took her place to wait on us...he was fantastic. The waiter made up for the bad waitress. The food was great.....my son and I had breakfast..which is my favorite meal of the day. (when someone else makes it) Barb

As someone who has worked in the food service industry for a long time I can tell you that this is normal. Gone are the days where restaurants made everything fresh in house, especially things like side dishes, biscuits, and greasy spoon type things like chipped beef. I have never worked at Holly's so I don't know for sure, but I'm betting that they use Sysco for most of their things. Just about every place does. Sysco took what Marriott Food Services did which was fully prepared and semi-prepared meals (they do college cafeterias, cruise ships, hotels and things like that) and expanded that to include ingredients, and raw items like steak and seafood. They offer different levels of quality too. The lowest level is mainly for bars. Just think of Big Bat's and that is entirely Sysco's low level of fried stuff, average cuts of beef, smaller than normal wings, etc. I know this from working there. The next level up is the same food more or less, but better quality wings, bigger burgers, better cuts, etc. The top level is high quality ingredients and top cuts of beef, fresh seafood, and everything else that you will find at Fisherman's and Annie's. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and it is not a poke at these places, it's just ingredients. The thing is, when a top level place is already using Sysco for the cuts of beef and things like that, it's really tempting for them to then go with the prepared Sysco items like jalapeno poppers, mozzarella sticks, chicken strips, and definitely the soups. So, no matter where you eat, most likely at least part of your meal was a Sysco pre made item, and the items themselves all came from Sysco. Holly's waitress just was honest and told you the truth. You can't blame restaurants for going the Sysco way because it's not bad stuff, it gets delivered right to their door, and it saves time in the kitchen. Without being told, you'd never know the difference.

You are 100% right.
"Homemade" these days is only true when you do it yourself.

The last time I ate at Hollys I ordered their special. It was scallops. I got so ill when I left, I threw up, spent the entire night in the bathroom... I will leave out the gory details, but you can figure out the rest. I wish Hollys luck because it is local, but you won't ever see me in that joint again! I am breaking out in a sweat just thinking about Hollys! Barf

As one who has been going to Holly's since back in the 60's when they were open all night.. and the local watermen would be in there at 3 in the morning with a good buzz on.. the place is ... consistent..
The chicken dinner was always good. Other than that I was usually disappointed in the quality of the food for the price I paid.
For whatever reason, Hollys always seemed to be a little pricey.
I stop there once in a while for breakfast.. while good, those canned home fries after seasoned by the kitchen give me the worst heartburn! Plus, when breakfast costs me over $10 by the time I leave a 15-20% tip I question why I did that.
But, Hollys is a local landmark and I still patronize them periodically.
Best regards, BC

the kitchen give me the worst heartburn! I take Zantac 150 like mints, and I truly can't rave enough about Holly's. I try to impress my (very hard to impress) girlfriend with fancy restaurants and this is seriously her favorite place! Never any heartburn for me...and the thought of marinara starts me up!
