After a bad experience with one local kennel, I search around better before putting my dog at another kennel. WYE RIVER KENNELS IN QUEENSTOWN IS REALLY WONDERFUL! More play time with the dogs, more run area, lower price, attentive staff, very caring people - just really liked it! Here is their site: www.wyeriverkennel.com/index.html

If you don't mind me asking, but what kennel did you have a bad experience and what happened? (We had a similar bad experience when we kenneled our dogs on the western shore.) Looking for a new, well recommended place that will really care for our dogs!
Thanks!

Jason,
Would you mind doing that for the kennel you use on the western shore? I use one over there, although not very much in the last couple of years, and would like to make sure it's not the same as the one you had a bad experience with.
Thanks!

We took our dogs to Dogwood Acres in Davidsonville when we lived in Annapolis....they are an excellent kennel and really cared about the dogs! I highly recommend them to anyone! They actually pay people to go in their huge wooded fenced in yard and play with the dogs! We did kennel the dogs once at Arnold Pet Station once and they came back really weird and looked bad. They snapped out of it in a few days, but they were not their usual post kennel self. Since we can no longer make the trip to DA, we now kennel at Canine Country Club in Queenstown and they are also excellent people with a really well run kennel that we would recommend as well! www.caninecountryclub.net/

Looking for a new, well recommended place that will really care for our dogs! Thanks! Hi Jason, I don't feel that it is appropriate for me to name the kennel on a public forum such as this. I also had a bad experience at a local dentist's office and I will not publish the dentist's name either (out of respect for the dentist and to the forum owner, Rich). I can tell you that my dog did not die and my situation is not anything serious enough that I would ever contemplate a lawsuit over. However, what happened is something that keeps me from ever going back to that kennel. I have also told friends who have animals about my experience. I have also told them about my delight with Wye River Kennels. I am sure there are other fine kennels in the area also. I went to several which I considered "acceptable" and lastly, Wye River, which I really like. In a place as small as Kent Island, word of mouth/references are really important. I have no problem with promoting good services and good companies; however, I do have a problem with spreading my negative feelings on a public forum. People complaining about bad food or service at restaurants is different, some people have positive experiences while others have bad experiences and it is a subjective type of thing (my point being that the restaurants don't really lose any business over a bad pizza review, whereas a kennel could possibly lose a lot of business). Jason, there is also another thread about kennels in here from sometime in 2007.

I've used Dogwood Acres since moving here in September 2001 and will continue to do so. I was very unimpressed with Canine Country Club and have heard some horror stories from people who have used them. To me, no distance is too far to drive for superior service, especially when it comes to my pets. I do not have, nor will I ever have, 2-legged children. That is what my pets are to me and deserve care the way "I" would treat them even when they are not at home.

I would like to hear some of these horror stories from Canine Country Club people are gossiping about. The other alternative is $20-$30 a visit to have a local petsitter come to the house. That is pricey.

My usual kennel - Dogwood Acres - is booked for a weekend in June when we have a wedding to go to. I contacted Wye River and went out for a tour week before last. 3 of my dogs will be staying there for in a couple of weeks for the weekend. I'll also give a report when I return.
Thanks for the recommendation Lynn.

Wye River Kennels gets my vote and all my future business HANDS DOWN! What a terrific place! Our big fella was happy and seemed to have really enjoyed his time there! Their prices are very reasonable, the facility is amazing, and the folks there truly love the animals they are caring for! Like I said...they are my dogs new kennel from now on! Thanks WRK!!

DOH! Totally forgot to write a review.
Although I still prefer Dogwood Acres, I would use Wye River Kennel again in a pinch. They are small, well-run, reasonably priced, and the owner's live on the premises. My dogs were happy and tired (from playing and exercise) when I picked them up.

I've tried several kennels since I've adopted my labrador and the one that I have settled on is Hairy Haven on 301 just north of the outlets. They are extremely clean, have handlers with the dogs at all times when they are outside (roughly 1 acre play areas), flat rates so you are not paying for a snack, play time, water time, 1 on 1 love time, the list is endless of what you get tagged with from other kennels. The place is all inclusive. My dog LOVES it there. I've been to some of the other kennels mentioned and find them no where near as clean, the staff is much less personal, and in hot weather, the AC at HH is ALWAYS working, not just fans in the kennel. I love my dog, he is my son my baby boy, HH is the only kennel for me.

The only things I didn't like about HH was when they aren't in the big play area, they are in their individual kennels and I found them rather small. I also thought HH was overpriced. The place is clean and they do seem to take good care of the dogs though. I would use HH if needed in a pinch, but, I have more than 1 dog, so its too expensive for me to put them there for more than 1 day if I don't have to.

I just picked my 2 dogs up from Hairy Haven this morning and they had a great time! They got A+ on their Camper "Report Card" and the staff said they were going to miss them because they were so much fun to play with! The staff seems to really enjoy their jobs and get up close and personal with the dogs they board. I would recommend them to anyone; however the fee was pretty steep...$500 for 9 days for 2 dogs (dachshund and dalmatian) and they shared a kennel so they could be together.

Just picked my 3 large dogs up from WRK on Sunday after 9 days of 'vacation' and they seem to have loved it! Our fourth dog, older and smaller, was able to stay with a relative. They were excited to come home but also then slept most of the next two days. They were/are in great spirit and definitely seem as though they would have no problem going back if need be. They personnel at the kennel were very friendly and even applied the dogs flea/tick repellent that I had forgotten to do before we left at no additional charge. The price, as others have mentioned, was excellent as well when compared to other kennels in the area. It is an all inclusive price and included a bath and nail trimming. Our cost came to just over $400 for the 3 large dogs for 9 days. And an even better 'peace of mind' factor than the price is that the owners live on premises so there is always someone around to tend to your loved ones. So if we need them again, it is nice to know that WRK and their staff is there for our furry family members!
