It's fast approaching the date this year is September 13, 2009, when Kent Island American Legion Post 278 makes their annual trip to the Perry Point Vet home, where we bring them busloads of donated items and present the center with a generous check to help them get through the next year. So start cleaning out your closets! We need men and women's clothing, coats, books, paper, pens, pencils, etc. Clothes must be clean and in serviceable condition (last year as we were going thru the donations and packing them up for transport, we had to throw out a lot of clothes that were dirty, and torn and just not appropriate) So please make sure you have them cleaned! You can drop off your donations to the post any day of the week just let them know it's for Perry Point! Many KIO members donated lots of stuff last year and it was truly appreciated!! Thanks again in advance for your support! The address to the legion is: 800 Romancoke Road Stevensville Maryland 21666 Phone: 410-643-2728 thanks again!! Eine Commander *yes, it is official I am the commander for the post!!! *

Commander Eine (congrats; that's very exciting!), What is the drop-dead deadline for getting "stuff" over there? We may have some gently-used clothing, and we are looking to get some of the "way-too-many" books that we've accumulated over the years to people who would love them as much as we have. Will also see what I can dig up in the way of other needed items. I don't get over the bridge as much at this time of year, but closer to September things get busy for me again, and I would be happy to donate to the folks up at Perry Pt. Thanks!

Hi Eine,
I have some odds and ends housewares that I am happy to donate. So many boxes, so little time, but I will drop it off at the Legion. Are there receipts available for tax purposes?
Congratulations to your post!

may I inquire Eineb...re: books (i'm an avid reader, and a hardback reader) and many are of the bestseller lists over a number of years...
i've got tons and tons literally in bookcases at my perm home (i used to leave many at a time in my marina laundry room, along w/nautical magazines...as it was understood that all were welcome to walk off with anything from the 'bookcase' in our laundry room..) - anyway,
what type of books are you looking for? i'll be glad (and thankful to donate, i've not asked the QAC free library yet if they'd be interested, but i had planned to at some point - not looking for any tax deduct - ust happy to pass on to those interested, they're all great reads, i can list what authors/titles i have) was raised in a family that are avid book/newspaper readers and w/all the hardbacks accumulated over the years, it's a cardinal sin to 'throw out a book in the trash' ! really... thx
bjbay ps in the words of speeder 'salute' !

The vets range in age of young 20's to up in the 90's. I am sure a vast range of good reads, fact, fiction and fun will be appropriate...just as I am sure that it would be appropriate to probably divide your vast collection between the different organizations around our community!! But if you are anything like me, I have a really hard time giving up my hardcover books.... Paperbacks..no problems... but hardcover....hmmmmm my dad is the same way.... But any amount of books would be awesome!! I will check with the service officer to see if there is a specific type of genres that may appeal more than others just in case.... and since the SO is the one really organizing it..,..,LOL don't want to step on his toes.... since I happen to sleep with him............LOL~~~

eineb - yes, like you, i don't part w/my re-reads (and oh do i have those as well, but i am a reader - both fact & fiction), but no paperbacks, sorry... i will start boxing books up and bringing them back from PA to KI, i'm sure the titles will be of interest and i'm glad to help out, i've already told my mom that there's an interest for books - and she's got 3x more than me! but yes, we don't toss books into the trash, so i'm gonna be boxing! thx again for your reply

I hear ya,,, I buy paperbacks every once in awhile, but if I am going to keep it, hard cover all the way!!!
I have so many books that I re-read.... just because they are awesome and you truly get something new out of the book no matter how many times you read it!!!
you should open a second hand book store, man I would love to do that!! probably have enough inventory on my own to start out!! LOL!!!!

Going through my library too. It's mostly non-fiction, but I also have some Tom Clancy & W.E.B. Griffin to give.

Greeting cards? My mom had a ton of them, and my dad had me go through the drawers where she kept them. (He needs sympathy and thank you cards, but other types of greeting cards, e.g. "get well soon", etcs, he sent home with me). I plan to go thru what I brought, but probably will only keep a portion. If those would be of any use, I'll set a bunch aside. ?

I just went thru the inventory of what we have received so far and WE DO NOT NEED ANY MORE HARDBACK/PAPERBACK BOOKS for this trip. We have tons of boxes of books so far......
But this just in: Audio Books are something they are asking for. DVD's, CD's, stationary, etc. etc. etc....
Mcbeth, I ll ask the Service Officer about the greeting cards... I think it would be cool.... but let me make sure.
Thanks everyone for what has been dropped off so a far!!

I'll wait for your instructions about the cards. (I'll sort them according to type if they are needed). Will see if there are any CDs or DVDs that I would be permitted to donate, too. (Most are my daughter's). If anyone ever gets up to Baltimore and you have books to donate, here is an interesting place: www.bookthing.org/Thanks!

I have more this year as well. tried to send you a PM..... You have me blocked.? We donated alot last year, and hope to help out again. I'd prefer not to make this a public forum about donations. And in a private manner. These most deserving vets need so much for the contributions that they do for our country! And I want send a special Thank-You to your wonderful husband who just returned in June. Our son Justin is in the Navy chasing pirates, and we can't wait until he arrives home again soon. But then again, after we had you here, not so sure. -CG

Anyway, back on topic, what hours can donations be dropped off? Lisa and I both work during the day. We just did a cleaning and got rid of several boxes of clothing, but for a good cause, I'm sure we can find plenty more.

Thanks, 2IU

He's out chasing pirates and loving it! Frank, I took this kind of negative. My boy is over there chasing pirates that are attacking US ships carrying cargo so that we all can be safe back here in the land of plenty. I think you were trying to be funny, but in Justin's mind it is a very serious matter. This kid is only 20 yrs old, made four promotions in his first year in the Navy. He was in Israel walking down the street one afternoon, with two buddies, in uniform, and passed a woman that stopped them, pointed her finger at them and said, " Devil, devil, devil". I think our boys need strong support from all us back here. They are looking for us as a support system. The situation that occured on Easter was planned, executed to professionally, and the only ones " taken out" were the pirates. Attack our nation, you will pay. GOD love the US NAVY

No dishes? How about sheets, and kitchen ware ? I have a set of dishes that we don't use, Pyrex bowls, silver plated flatware, large cooking utensils, etc. If our yard sale doesn't work our the way we would like it to... I would love to donate a bunk bed set, new( blue metal frames, mattresses, and reversible comforters from red to blue, an oak kitchen table, an oak kitchen curio cabinet, a glass top table, and 6 oak chairs, 2 captains, and 4 mates chairs.
Is this possible? Our neighbor who is a member of the Legion has a truck and if we could get some help, we would love to donate the furniture if it doesn't go.
Thanks! K
