Hi all,
I'm considering moving to the Kent Island/Chester area and am wondering if anyone can tell me their experience in commuting from there to Bethesda? I've driven it once in early June and it took me about an hour even passing a few accidents on Rt 50. but friends tell me I should try it again after school starts to see if there is a difference.
Thanks.

I commute into DC every day and it takes about an hour during rush hour. I take the commuter bus that goes downtown (cost is $45 for 5 round trips). You could do that and take the Metro from K-Street and 14th which would probably add an additional 20 minutes. The only time that the commute is Hell is when it rains. 50 backs up at Bowie every time the weather is bad.

Thanks for the feedback. An hour that moves would be better than an hour that crawls which is what I am doing from upper Montgomery County now.

Just don't be that guy that gets to the bus 2 minutes before it leaves everyday and you won't have a problem. It seems like the same 5 people show up late everyday and annoy the rest of us!

It's not so crowded that you can't find a seat, but just about every seat is full in the KI Express (950 Line) in the morning. You don't want to be the last stop in DC for pick-up on the return trip though because they turn people away from time to time because it's full. That's on the 5PM 950 and the 4:45 922 lines.

Thanks for the tip Pete, I wish I had those hours, but it seems like my late hours might be a benefit. I'll be on the last bus (6:30-ish)

Don't even try. I go to Greenbelt and in the morning it's not that bad, however in the evening it is always backed up from ATA Blvd to the Severn "Scenic" River Bridge.

With EZ pass... very rarely will you have trouble. The worst part of traffic is before the Severn River Bridge. People blow the bridge issue out of proportion, in my opinion. Of course there are accidents that back it up - but that could happen anywhere. Again, just IMO.

My wife and I do the D.C - Kent Island commute every darn day. I like the MARC commuter trains and leave at 8:00 am and make it to my office on Capitol Hill, across the street from Union Station, in one hour and fifteen minutes, give or take. I take the MARC train from either Seabrook or Bowie State stations. It’s approx. 35 - 40 min. driving to the train station and 30 minutes on the train, then walking to my office, door to door. My wife isn’t train person and drives from door to door to the same building taking 45 min to an hour, but she leaves the house at 5:45 am. That’s our story, good luck

There is a huge difference after school starts. I commute to New Hampshire Ave and the Beltway from Chester. On a good day it takes an hour. I think that during the non-summer months it would take an hour and a half to get to Bethesda.
