Three Wake County high school students died Sunday after their car crashed into a tree
WAKE COUNTY (WTVD) -- Investigators with the North Carolina Highway Patrol said Thursday that they estimate the car in an accident that killed three Wake Forest-Rolesville High School students was travelling at 129 miles per hour.
Sixteen-year-old Austin Flowers was the driver in the crash that happened around 9 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Old Pearce Road and Highway 96. The teen's 2011 Dodge Challenger ran off the road, flipped, and then hit the tree.
Funerals for the three were held Thursday. Flowers' funeral took place at the Richland Creek Community Church in Wake Forest.
Funeral services for 16-year-old Lane Meyer were held at Rolesville Baptist Church, and a memorial service for 17-year-old Matthew Speight was held at the Rolesville Baptist Church Family Life Center.
Meyer's classmate Matt Kirschner attended his funeral. He spoke of the reaction at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School.
"They're all just destroyed by it. A lot of people love him, loved all of them. It's just devastating to our school," he said.
Kirschner also played baseball with Austin Flowers.
"He's just a great guy. Everyone loved him. Nobody didn't like him," said Kirschner. "I still know that I have all the memories of him. They'll live in my heart forever."
The only survivor of the crash, Meyer's cousin, 16-year-old Brenden Pearce, was airlifted to WakeMed. He is currently listed in good condition.
Authorities say alcohol was not involved with the crash, and all four teens were wearing their seatbelts.
Meyer's family issued a statement to the media Wednesday. It says in part: "Our son was an incredible young man that will be missed by more than we will ever know."
