Apparently Oscarsdad doesn't understand that HOMELESS people are homeless. They aren't criminals. They aren't drug addled sex maniacs out to terrorize and molest children. They just don't have a place to live. However, Oscarsdad does seem to understand the term NIMBY very well. AGREE, YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU LIKE. JUST WHY IN STEVENSVILLE,MD???

Lainey, Thank you for the information. I thought the house on State Street was a Transition home? Is there another shelter on State Street? Yes, one in the same. 325 State Street. Oscarsdad, That house, 325 state street, has been a shelter under Krista's direction for the last 4-5 years. I am not exactly sure if she calls it a transition home or a shelter. You are the only here insisting it is a transitional home only. I do know it has been there and I have, in some of my work as a community volunteer, referred people to her organization when they have wandered into mine looking for shelter. Im curious, since you are so wary of the homeless, where do you think they are every day and every night?

And they refer to this project as their attempt to bring their homeless shelter and transitional home under one roof. That means THEY ARE NOT UNDER THE SAME ROOF NOW!!!!

"The new building will replace the current rancher-style transitional home with an 8,623 square foot, two-story facility." It's not a HOMELESS SHELTER. www.haven-ministries.org/files/1014/0388/7246/Press_Release_6-14.pdf

Ok Oscar you win the semantics game. I thought a place where folks with no home can go to sleep at night in a bed with a roof over their heads was called a shelter. Either way, whatever you want to call it, 325 State Street has been taking in folks who do not own the land or the building and letting them sleep inside for the last 4-5 years. They also use the church in Chester from December to April for that same purpose, to keep folks indoors at night in the cold weather. So lets all be afraid of them.

If you actually read what I've typed, you'd see the folks in a transitional home must maintain employment, work with a case worker, and can only stay for a max of two years. Homeless shelter occupants have no requirements like this. If you follow www.facebook.com/saveourstevensville you'll see quotes from church volunteers who indicate the homeless at KIUMC are not helping themselves and getting on their own feet. Regardless, haven ministries is expanding its operations and creating a facility to house homeless other than the ones they house now (at KIUMC!) for 12 months, not just 5 months. Therefore, the argument that today's operations will be identical to tomorrow's, is a severely flawed one.

Several questions regarding the homeless shelter:
1. I understand that there is to be a halfway house as well. Is this accurate? I for one am more concerned about a halfway house as those people are already proven to have a criminal history.
2. What are the plans to increase security at the schools, parks, and on the trail? I have not seen any plans to add lights or increase police presence.
3. How is this location beneficial to the homeless who would be using it? Would it not make more sense to put it behind the future sight of Chester Village? They are about to create a large strip mall there, including a movie theatre. These new stores will need employees and it would be most convenient for the homeless to have easy access to these new jobs. In addition to all of the box stores that are over there. I fail to see where those job opportunities exist in this location.
4. Where was this publicized to the community? We moved here almost two years ago and never saw a thing. I also work in a nonprofit with a policy department, and so am aware of many of the developments going on. However, this was never mentioned.
5. What precautions are the Haven officials and county officials taking to ensure that crime does not rise? I know we all want to believe the best in people, and help the homeless come back into society, but we can't deny that there is a tendency to abuse drugs and alcohol, and a tendency towards other crime. I just moved back over from living for 5 years in Washington DC. During that time, I was sexually assaulted by the homeless on several occasions, and verbally assaulted by the homeless almost daily. I moved over here to get away from that culture. If that's what happens in broad daylight on a crowded street in DC, what can we expect on an unlit running trail?
I appreciate any and all responses. Looking forward to going to the meeting on the 25th to voice my concerns.

While I'm generally in agreement with you on a number of things, I don't understand your post. By asking the question I did not suggest that these people are criminas or crazy,, etc., but where do they go?? I Imagine they're not eligible for day care, etc. So do they sit around in parks, macdonalds, etc? Where do they spend their time if they have no job? Hopefully they're looking, but there are many hours in the day, many hours that may have inclement weather, etc. where do they use facilities? Do they wander between the library and the fast food places, or what? They may get assistance for food and such, but where do they go? Whole families, right? Not a political issue, other than is there provision at the county or state level? We don't have daytime shelters, for example.

I haven't read about that.

I have seen the plans for the State Street facility. The downstairs will contain a small homeless shelter - which has been housed in the Harbor View community (KIUMC) for the last few years without incident or opposition. The upstairs will have a few small transitional apartments which it is expected will mainly be occupied by single moms - until a more pernamant situation can be found for them.
I live very near the State Street site, and I am glad that it will be there. Kudos to Our Haven for providing a safe place for a single mom or an elderly person to go and find help. Its a great location for this facility.
See you on August 25th.

Mikey how does this add to home values? You must not own the home you talk about living in. When you buy a home in a neighborhood, you want and pray values go up. A homeless shelter does not increase property value. Stevensville could be the most exclusive community in Maryland. It could be bethesda,md. But it won't because we are helping everyone except ourselves. If I become homeless, I expect to live in the ghetto. When I work I expect to live with working people.

Mikey, With so little information coming out to the public I am VERY Leary of what we are being told, ie..Not much so far, I have read thanks to OscarsDad4-Sir Correct me if I am wrong here. it will house 10 transitional families upstairs and down stairs will have a seasonal homeless shelter.. Another question will be "Seasonal" will it just be for winter months or will they open it as they see fit and then say well it's seasonal?

Haven Ministries has already committed to operating this shelter on a year round schedule. Read their publications. It will not remain seasonal.

Its a great location for this facility. See you on August 25th. There are no restrictions on marital status or gender for who they'll house. If they restricted this to single moms, they'd be discriminating. Wake up. 29 beds is the size of the shelter. I've seen the plans, too. I've also seen that the housing authority has many other transitional homes in QAC. That fact, coupled with the fact that Stevensville had a VERY LOW poverty rate, leads me to think that it's only a matter of time before the shelter is at capacity and the transitional home is under capacity. What's to stop the facility from becoming 100% homeless shelter? I'll answer that question for you... NOTHING. The grant and zoning allows for this.

Oh heck, if they build it in back of Chester Village the same people that think their neighborhood is too good for it will complain that they don't want vagrants near the movie theater that their kids go to. Interesting how someone else mentioned home values. "As long as it's not in my backyard." Will someone please tell me where all of the box stores are!

Funny that Oscarsdad gets attacked for having a "Not in My Backyard" or "NIMBY" mentality, when from the sounds of it, this shelter is actually going to be in his backyard. Most posting here probably live nowhere near the site in question (myself included).
How many of you can honestly say that you would knowingly buy property if you knew that this shelter was going to be in your backyard? How many of you can honestly say that you would be happy to find out that this shelter was being built next to or down the street from your existing home?
To date I haven't heard of any issues with the existing shelter, and believe that they have done good work, but Oscarsdad has raised some good questions about how the new facility will be used, and he seems more than willing to listen.

Hi knottygal - I think most people here are referring to the strip mall that includes the Dollar Tree, JBK, Big Lots, and Burger King, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, etc (ant the Walgreens and Rite Aid across the street) as the highest concentration of Box Stores, including Safeway and the multiple labor companies located within walking distance. There is also the assumption that many of the stores opening in the same complex as the movie theatre will be box stores. Not to mention all of the labor opportunities that will arise from the construction site itself. It seems to me that these jobs would be more attainable to the homeless trying to get back on their feet then the highly competitive jobs at the business park, which is the only high concentration of jobs located near the shelter.
