On Tuesday, the Queen Anne’s County Commissioners took action in a split vote to kill the homeless shelter project on State Street in Stevensville. The location could still be used as an “emergency shelter” as it is currently zoned for a homeless shelter.
The shelter was to be a 8,623-square-foot building that would replace the structure (house) operated by Haven Ministries at 325 State Street and merge the shelter and housing in this location. Kent Island United Methodist Church currently houses the seasonal shelter.
Neighbors on State Street and the immediate surrounding area fought to have this shelter relocated and were able to have a strong showing at recent commissioner / county meetings. Haven Ministries Executive Director Krista Pettit said "It was an outrageous injustice that was done today. This is 10 years of planning, and we've put into it hundreds of thousands of dollars, all resolutions passed and it's a totally permitted project." Opponents argued that the project was passed without their input and is too close to the surrounding schools and the Cross Island Trail.

Perhaps Ms. Pettit and Haven Ministries, along with QACHA should have considered a more suitable location before spending TAX PAYERS MONEY on this location??!!
