There is a new bill in the MD House to have Maryland officially appologize for slavery: www.kentisland.cc/wnavnews.htmToo little, too late - digging up a part of history that we should forget - or right on target. What's your take:

If this is what it takes to get a certain segment of the population feeling better about their situation and therefor leads them to a better life, then so be it. Personally I don't see why anyone would care about this apology because the people that had even the slightest thing to do with slavery are all long dead, but like I said above.. So be it.

But seriously, no one.. and I mean no one still alive has felt the effects of slavery or will ever feel the effects. It's been dead since the 1800's. This makes me sad. But this state is weird like that.

Apologize for something that occurred over 150 years ago; why? I sympathize with those affected by Slavery, back then, but it's time to move forward and work on what effects people now and in the future - same thing with the thought of compensating people for what happened to their ancestors

Why not formally apologize to the Native Americans? Afterall, they were treated, in many ways, as bad or worse.
What about the animals species we've driven to extinction?
Hell, I want an apology, too... let me think of something I can't remember first.

My ancestors fought for the Union during the Civil War. Why should I apologize? Should we go back to the beginning of time and apologize for all the slavery that has ever existed throughout history? Ridiculous. Our government at work wasting time on nonsense that would be better spent on a worthwhile issue.

A century from now someone is going to expect an apology from the US for going into Afghanistan, Iraq, etc.

[quote author=andrewd board=general thread=1172844506 post=1172849785... They got burned at the stake you know.[/quote] Can you friggin' imagine!!?? Burned alive at a stake... that's just got to be one of the worst ways to go. Irrelevent, yes, but geeeeeeez that just makes me cringe. Definitely the witches deserve an apology. I'm Irish, that's what my apology is for. I want an apology from the Brits for... well for something.

Rich, great poll..Being here in Virginia, where they kind of apologised...Let a dead horse stay dead. Like others, who's still alive that had anything to do with slavery? Being a Native American, no one's ever apoligised to me nor my ancestors.

Maybe we should apologize for the Holocaust also. If it happens, the 1/4 of me that is Native American would like an apology too!

Slavery started when Caveman tribe A conquered Caveman tribe B, and ended with the advent of machinery. An apology needs to come from the guilty, and go to the victim. If your 1/2 black do you apologize to yourself?.........As a white man I consider M.L.King to be a great American.... God bless all the Americans shedding their blood for our freedom.

Shadow I.........In the case of slavery in the USA, everyone is dead. End of story.......... After the Civil War the Blacks were equal in the eyes of the law. The apology should come from those who were in power, and denied the Blacks their Constitutional rights. Rosa Parks was arrested for sitting in the front of a public bus, while her tax dollar helped pay for that bus. The black man shed his blood in every war from the revolution until this day. It was the responsibility of the government to protect their rights, and they refused.

Pete, answer the question, WHO's the "guilty" and I'll add one, WHO's the "victim"? I can save you the trouble and answer both questions. I promise you there's NONE LEFT. They're all gone, and an apology will help NO ONE and serve no purposeI didn't do it, I didn't condone it, I don't apologize for it and neither should the state or the country. It happened, It's Over (really it is!), TIME TO MOVE ONE. BTW: The Indians got a WAY WORSE DEAL.

Pete - again, my question was who do you think is/was "guilty". By the way those who were in power are also gone, so how would you propose they apologize? I sympathize with those affected back then, but feel no need to apologize. We are talking slavery here, what does the rest of your comments have to do with it
