BRIAN SCHWAAB...YOU MUST HAVE A GREAT JOB THERE.....YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO. LEAVE THESE ISSUES ALONE AND LET THESE MEN RUN FOR OFFICE WITHOUT SCORNED DEPUTIES COMMENTING ON ALL THAT IS WRONG AND OBVIOUSLY NOTHING RIGHT. IF YOU ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THESE ISSUS WHY DID YOU NOT TAKE CHARGE WITH ALL YOUR "BACKGROUND"...AND CHANGE THINGS. YOU JUST STATED THAT GARY HOFMANN WAS HIMSELF THE TARGET OF A THESE ONGOING ATTACKS? MAYBE HE KNOWS THAT AND THIS IS WHY HE IS WORKING SO HARD TO ENSURE THE CHANGES WILL BE MADE NOW!! LETS GIVE THEM BOTH A CHANCE, PLEASE

In response to QAVoter. Why is it if someone voices a opinion does it have to be a attack against one of the candidates? I am reading these posts and many of them do not even mention the two candidates. What I am perceiving is information that voters should know about the current conditions in the Sheriff's Office. If we as voters know theses things then we probably should take our voting priveledges seriously. Besides who would better know of problems than the Deputies and former Deputies. WE NEED TO KNOW!!!

To QA Voter. FYI- I have never said anything negative about any of the candidates. I'm sorry if you take it that way. I have no control in what anonoymous deputies write on this site. I can only sympathize with them. I do know and or have met both candidates for sheriff. I have met Mr. Rhodes and am aware of his background. I find him professional and of integrity. I also know Sgt. Hofman from working at the Sheriff's Office. I have always known him to be a nice guy and professional and respectful towards me. My comments have been about the current issues in the Sheriff's Office which have been created by the top two bosses. I have no reason to say anything negative about Sgt. Hofman as he was not one of the reasons I left the agency. Try not to take my comments as well as others too personal, unless in fact you are Sheriff Crossley or Curtis Benton. In closing good luck to both candidates.

In reading all these posts, it seems the root of a lot of our problems stems from a lack of manpower. It's quantity, not quality that is making people angry. I have had to call the police twice in the last seven years and the response has always been slow. Thank goodness it was not a time essential emergency, but each time, the officers had to come from 15-20 miles out to respond. Officers were always polite and courteous, but were run all over the county to do their jobs. It seem as the number of people grow in this county, so should the number of officers. Can any of the officers posting here tell us how the police department has grown in the last several years? Surely the county has collected more than enough taxes with the housing boom on the eastern shore, where is that money going? Just the presence of police cars is a crime deterent in itself.

The place I moved from was better! Maybe I should move back. The neighborhood I came from would NEVER have tolerated all the speeding and other forms of juvenile deliquency that are the daily fare in Cloverfields. Some of the kids seem to wish they were living in SE DC and do their best to recreate the atmosphere of drug gangs on every corner. I cannot figure out how parents don't realize that cars with loud stereos stopping at their house every night at all hours for 10 minutes and leaving again = their kid selling drugs. Do you think he sits outside all night because he is studying astronomy? At first I thought it was just how the locals were, but after I got to know some people it seems that right before Cloverfields and KI in general got expensive a wave of "white trash" came over here from the western shore So how's about you find out whatever your old neighborhood did that was so good and do it here? It was probably in the cycle, in the old age part of it. It's all a cycle, and if you old neighborhood didn't have it, it will. Young families grow up, kids start driving, Kids grow up, start their own family. it's all in the cycle, Loud music = Drugs? not hardly, maybe some but certainly not all. Did ya notice people don't WAVE anymore?I did. I wave at people walking in my neighborhood, MOST of them look at me like I'm nutz.... A couple wave back in shock. Here's an idea, WAVE BACK! Get to know your neighbors instead of assuming "that's how locals are" Chances are they aren't "locals" but more transplants like you, and ME. Living here doesn't make you, or me a local, 20 years hasn't and I expect another 20 years won't. and no, I'm not defending the all night kids on the block, mine aren't out there I can tell ya that. IT'S 11:00PM, DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR KIDS ARE?If not, you should, OR you'll get the call! There's not much for kids around here during the day, THERE'S NOTHING FOR THEM ON THE STREETS AFTER 10PMEnd rambling now

In response to Franks post. Frank the Sheriff's Office shifts will usually have 2 maybe 4 deputies including a corporal on a shift if we are lucky. The concept has been 1 deputy would work from centreville to the Bridge and 1 deputy would work from centreville to the kent county line. Sometimes we may have 2 deputies working centreville to the bridge. The south deputies as they would be called would also have to work around Rt 50 up 404 to the town of Queen Anne also. A corporal would oversee the shift many times. The Sheriff's Office has not grown with the countyor the growing crime issues. Were looking at maybe 20 patrol deputies. This would be because over the years Sheriff Crossley has not presented himself well to the County Commissioners in regards to needing more manpower and the reasons for such a need. To sum it all up it is like the 1000 pound elephant that is in the crowded room yet nobody wants to aknowledge that it is there. Hope this sheds some light for you

Frank,
Currently the Sheriff's office has 16 road officers, which are divided onto 4 shifts. That gives you a total of four officers. Each shift has one Sergeant and one Corporal. The Sergeants are mandated to sit on the desk (In Centreville) during day work for the whole 12 hours. Now your down to four road officers and one Corporal per shift. Now here is where it gets good! You have a total of five deputies working all of the county as long as know one calls out sick, vacation leave, personal leave, holiday leave, training leave, traffic court, criminal court, oh dont forget circuit court. The average officer working computes to about three for all of the County, which by the way is like over 450 square miles. But there's more. Three offciers, one gets a lock up, now your down to two. The county is growing in population at a pace that the current sheriff's office administration nor the county commissioners have kept up with. As far as your high taxes, there not going to public safety. It time that you as a citizen hold your elected officals accoutable for providing top public safety. You vote these people in. Lord knows you pay high enough taxes. The deputies that you do have are an excellant bunch of men and woman who are trained, licensed, certified professionals who give it there best for what they have to work with.

Thats my point. I've spent the last four at the DC MPD (fleet) where 3500 officers patrol 100 square miles! It is not the size of the area to be patroled, it is the number of people that occupy that area. More people = more calls. Some emergency, some non-emergency, but more work for the same number of officers. Someone has got to realize this area is growing, builders are building new houses, townhouses are popping up everywhere, people are moving to the shore, like it or not!
