Charles is the best candidate. He has spent many years in law enforcemment. He is a professional and down to earth type guy. He is not part of the current administration and the internal problems facing the agency right now. He would be able to come in and objectively bring the agency upto where it should be. This is what the county and the communities need from our sheriff's office.

FYI Charles did not write this. I did as someone who is from inside the sheriff's office. But I will remain anonymous for fear of reprisal.

What are the "internal problems" going on? I don't know if people are aware of this, I'm not. Thanks.

The Rhodes family is a family born and raised in Queen Anne's County.

Rich, under the current administration (Crossley's) there have been approximately 50 Deputies that have resigned since he has been the Sheriff. (the last twelve years). I knew many have left, however, I was shocked to hear that it has been this many. The county has lost many excellent Deputies, not to mention the tax dollars that were spent on training, uniforms and other related expenses. The Deputies have real strict arrest and traffic citation quotas (Etc.). There are serious manpower issues with only two maybe three Deputies patrolling the county at one time.

I had no idea. I also thought that ticket quotas were a thing of the past. Thanks for opening my eyes to this as both a resident and tax payer it's very disturbing.

What's the difference between Rhodes and Hoffman?

|
|
Post by on the inside on Sept 25, 2006 7:42:29 GMT -4
The difference is that Charles would be coming in from the outside and would be able to restore the agency to follow the right path. Gary has been part of Sheriff Crossley's administration as he refers to himself in the newspaper as a Command Deputy. Gary also is the Sergeant that oversees the trafffic/radar issues and assignments.

Rich, quotas are supposed to be of the past, in fact courts have ruled them illegal. The Deputies here are evaluated based on arrest and ticket numbers under Sheriff Crossley and Chief Benton. If the Deputies do not produce the numbers they are subjected to internal disciplinary measures. This pressure is one reason many Deputies have left.

Sounds like we have a corruption problem in Crossley's Sheriff Department. If quotas are illegal why isn't the States Attorney Frank Krativil enforcing the law? The problems in the Sheriff's Department, and the DNR start at a higher level. What did Charley Rhodes do about the quota system in the DNR police? The disposal plants that poured raw sewage into our waterways went undetected by DNR. Is the Bay cleaner after Charley's years of service? Ask the waterman that are still in business. If the good law enforcement officers had the courage to honor their oath made to the citizens, Crossley, Chief Benton, and others like them would be powerless.........pete jr

Instead of all the posturing, how about telling me what he plans on doing differently? No more, he'll do more with less. I heard that the last election. Rhetoric doesn't work anymore!

I would be happy with anyone who would try and fix the drug problem in Cloverfields and Grasonville over writing traffic tickets on Main Street in the trap-zone of 30MPH in Chester any day. It seems like the police are only going after revenue by pulling over people on both Rte 8 and Main St for rolling faster than the bogus speed limit, rather than addressing the real problems that are off the main roads in the communities. Just go into Grasonville into Fisher Commons on Cemetery Rd on any given night and you will see open drug sales. The police are nowhere in sight because they are too busy harassing the non-drug dealing residents that might be going faster than the impossible 30MPH speed zone on Main street, or the end-all catch - someone leaving Big Bats with a slight buzz. Priorities are so out of whack her that it makes a person with normal brain capabilities hurt.

The way that Sheriff Crossley and Chief Deputy Benton run the Queen Anne's Sheriff's Office is all about traffic tickets. The fact that Benton retired from the State Police, is more than likely the reason behind the way things are done. Many Deputies have left because of the quota based evaluation system and the harsh penalties imposed on them if they do not write high numbers in tickets. The agency will need to have a NEW SHERIFF from the OUTSIDE who can come in evaluate the department and make the appropriate changes in supervision ranks and the policies. This will direct the Deputies towards a more proactive community patrolling department with community relations skills. Then and only then will the Deputies be released from the current administration's strict traffic arrests and ticket quotas, thus allowing the Deputies to deal with the real crime issues in the county's communities. I can say this from a former Deputy's perspective. I will also say that I have nothing to gain or lose by being honest with these comments.

I agree to a certain point, however, DNR is not the same as the Sheriff's Office. The Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office is responsible for the primary law enforcement duties in the county.. The deputies that do stand up for what is right often find themselves punished and ultimately resign from their jobs. This also can happen in some cases if citizens stand up for themselves as in the case of Pete Richter. He stood upto the system and was railroaded. Yes there are some of us who do know what was done to him.

I am new to this website. I have read through many of the comments posted on many of the different topics. I am not pulling for one Sheriff canidate or the other because I believe the right man will win in November but I do read the paper and I am following the Sheriff's Race. I read in the Bay Times article a few weeks back that Mr. Rhodes is going to take the Sheriff's Department in a new direction and not focus on Traffic Enforce and instead focus on Drug Enforcement. I have read a few comments on the drug problem and I do believe it is a serious problem but I see and read Time and Time again.... speeding speeding speeding... Mr. Rhodes are you telling us you are not going to focus on what we the community deems important and switch it to what you think is important.?? Just food for thought.. So I ask each of you Mr. Rhodes and Mr. Hofmann please just listen to what the community wants and not what you deem as important.

The belittling from Mr. Rhodes friends and family has to stop. Certain family members are making voters feel uneasy. We do not want to be threatened by any political candidate. The public is starting to avoid these people and this will definitely take a toll on the campaign.
Make this a clean race, as Mr. Hofmann and Mr. Rhodes originally planned to do. Strong arming voters will have a negative effect.

For The Record! Any comments you read from me are from a person who is not a friend or family member of either candidate. My comments come from my experiences while working as a Deputy in the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office.

This is a first, But I think that I need to make a point. I do not care whom makes SHERIFF as long as he / she addresses the concerns that are important to OUR community. I have heard pro's and con's on both candidates, through on line forums and meeting friends of both, However... When I overheard a deputy whom was dressed in plain clothes talking with a friend at a local store, I was upset! How can a deputy, that represents all of our community talk politic's when working. This older deputy, Looks like he has been around for a long time was preaching Charlie Rhodes, and how Hoffman is not the best guy, well that made my decision. Hoffman got another vote. It is unprofessional that a working deputy, wearing civilian clothes, driving a police car, serving court papers is doing politic's on duty, burns me up. The community does not need to hear an insiders opinion on my time! Yes, my time, Serve your papers and do your politic's on your own time. Maybe retire and be a campaign manager, not paid by my tax dollars.

In response to Islander 21666, obviously you did not attend the Q.A. County 4-H fair or you would have been accosted like every other taxpayer of this county as well as taxpayers from other counties who attended this family event, by uniformed sheriff's deputies. These deputies were not asking for donations for charities or the under privileged but were soliciting votes for Gary Hofmann. As if that weren't bad enough, Sheriff Crossley was present while some of this took place, as if he was condoning this action. It was appalling to me and an embarrassment to the taxpayers of Q.A. County. Furthermore, I'd like to have Mr Hofmann's address so I could send him a bill for what it cost the taxpayers for the solicitation that occurred by these deputies during this week long even
