Take America Back I’m just an average American approaching my 68th birthday. I am not a political activist or party spokesperson. I have not been provided talking points that allow my comments to be perceived as politically correct or targeted to a particular demographic. I speak from my heart. The American people no longer are in possession of their country. The country has been hijacked by the very system that was designed to govern and protect it. I believe we are in an era of our history that is destructive. As I observe our elected politicians, I do not see many of them truly representing the people. They are so wrapped up in partisan politics that they have lost their objective views of what’s right for the people they claim to represent. We find ourselves in a continuous election cycle. As a result, the work of the people is lost, or more precisely, not well served. Both parties are more worried about keeping or regaining power than representing any one but their party. This is true in local government, state government, and the federal government. It has also dramatically impacted the judiciary. While all of this is going on we have a mainstream media that has reached new levels of incompetence. Local and State governments refuse to make important decisions that impact the people because they are too tied up in political positioning and fighting the opposing party. State governments are so busy pushing the Governor’s agenda or making the opposition party look bad that they no longer truly represent the people. Local judges are making laws from the bench impacting the people in their area and then when they finish, the people are facing years of appeals or worse having to hunt down felons who are free to continue terrorizing the community. Maryland is the “Poster State” for Government incompetence. This is not a Democratic, Republican, Independent, or any party problem, it is the people’s problem and we had better begin to pay attention or it will be too late to rescue this sinking ship. The people need to take their communities and states back from the politicians who have proven they can no longer competently govern. The federal government has reached a new low. Congressional approval ratings have reached new lows and it is well deserved. The acrimony in the federal government has reached a level where the federal government is nearly paralyzed. The president is so busy pushing his liberal agenda and spending trillions - claiming that this spending will stimulate the economy while investors are watching their wealth disappear. The people are being ignored. Poll after poll tells us that Americans did not support the stimulus bill and yet it was rushed to approval even when legislators claim they had no time to read the bill. It has failed and no one is saying let’s stop it and look for programs that actually work. The people did not support the cap and trade bill, but the House passed it anyway. The frenzied effort to push through a health care bill, that majorities of the people oppose, is further evidence that our elected representatives are totally out of touch with the people they represent. Those that are attending town halls to voice their opposition are being demonized and called domestic terrorists. Let’s see, we have a stimulus bill that does not stimulate the economy, an energy bill that does not increase oil and gas supplies and does not increase the use of nuclear power, a health care reform that does not include tort reform and is so complicated and vague that no one really knows what it will do. We have the release or leaks of classified information from numerous government agencies. These leaks have rendered important counter terrorism programs impotent. We have reached a point where we can not fight the war on terror because of these problems. No longer can we count on the people to support our country when it is at war. What happened to the unity that followed 9/11? Each party is looking for sound bites and spin instead of what is right for the people. The House of Representatives is so busy trying to hold power or to get power that the work of the people is secondary to partisan politics. The House is composed of career politicians rather than the people’s representatives. We are now living in the era of “ear-marks” not beneficial legislation. The House is working the fewest number of days in history. Very few elections are contested, producing a level of incumbency that is detrimental to progress. Incumbency has produced a degree of seniority which has created a dangerous level of incompetence or mediocrity in all areas of the House. The founders would not be happy with this House of Representatives. The Senate as far as I’m concerned is “broke”. This organization is incapable of getting much of anything done. They are a debate society not a legislative body. Their rules have become obsolete. Incumbency has created an “old age club” made up of career politicians. These people, for the most part, are not representing the people, only their political party and their desire to be successful in the next election. It is all about political parties, blue vs. red, sound bites and spin, ear-marks and bounty – not the interest of the people back home or what’s best for America. Hearings have now replaced legislating. Hearings have become political events not a chance to get the facts. Hearings are political opportunities for the Legislator and hell for those who have to be there. It is sad to watch good people, including hard working government employees, judges, high ranking government officials and others appear to testify only to be rudely treated by the committee members. You will never see just the average citizen called before these witch hunt committees because the government is not interested in what the real people think. It is also interesting that all of this incompetence is on live TV. Is it any wonder that these representatives of the people are more interested in how they sound and look than getting the information necessary to make intelligent decisions? It’s obviously not about the people, it’s about politics. While our executive and legislative branches are busy playing politics, the people are left unrepresented. We are struggling to conduct and win the war on terror, both worldwide and in Afghanistan. While the House and Senate hold hearings and many launch criticism, our brave young people in the armed forces are trying to win a war. While we watch our war tools decimated by leaks and criticism, the safety of the American people is jeopardized. We watch as tax reductions are stopped despite the proof that they help the economy. We watch thousands enter our country illegally while our representatives debate endlessly their political positions. We watch our schools fail. We watch as our infrastructure crumbles. We watch our Social Security system struggle. We watch our medical costs soar. We look at the highest cost of fuel in history while our legislators refuse to allow us to drill for our own oil. We watch small businesses and farms struggle while our legislators increase regulations and taxes. We watch as the Ggvernment continues to spend money it does not have. We watch as government grows and costs soar. We watch the legislators place ridiculous pork in needed bills and brag about their accomplishment. We watch endless hearings for the approval of competent people in government jobs and the judiciary. We watch as activist judges create new laws and a Supreme Court that is re-writing the Constitution. We watch lawyers filing frivolous law suits that are sapping our economy, while the lawyers in Congress cheer them on. We are at a point in time where our representative government is being challenged by the vary people chosen to run these organizations. Very simply put, the system is broke and needs to be fixed. While this is going on, we have a partisan media that refuses to report the news. This group has become particularly destructive in the last few years. They have released military secrets, replaced news stories with editorials, lied, participated in character assassination, exaggerated facts, convicted our servicemen before they have been charged, ignored any good news that did not fit their agenda, buried stories that should not have been hidden, glamorized the enemy, and helped and aided the terrorists that we are trying to defeat. If this group had been our eyes and ears during World War II, we would be an entirely different society. No one is looking out for the people, No one is representing what we need and require. Who do we turn to when all those around us seem to be supporting their own agenda? The only thing we have is each other and it is time for all of us to stand up and fight for the return of our government to the people. We need to defeat the incumbents and change the profile of both the House and the Senate. We need to insist that our legislative bodies begin the process to establish term limits in both houses. The Presidency has term limits and so should the Congress. Let us look at 6 years for the House and 12 years for the Senate. This would rid us of the royalty that has become the product of incumbency. We need to limit the terms of Supreme Court Justices. They no longer deserve life-time appointments. We should institute immediate laws that severely punish any one who leaks classified or secret information and include those who are also irresponsible enough to publish it. Stop watching the partisan networks and biased newspapers and maybe they would return to reporting the news. It is time for us to take back America. Tea parties and protests are a good start but the election booth is where we can really make a difference.

Good post, good points and I agree with Robmore that a source is needed.
One item concerning the TARP monies that seems to get lost and not get mentioned, is that about a third of that package were tax cuts. It wasn't all just spend.
I actually like the "Take America Back" slogan, as long as it doesn't become a nationalist movement. But, this is a very complicated and difficult process to do the needed changes to make it happen. If the republicans take over in the upcoming elections, they will not be able to just "cut taxes and deregulate" our way out of problems we have. Plus, the democrats will not be going away. They will still be there, you can't kill'em.
I believe that most people want things to change and become better. But, are people really willing to accept sacrifices for the benefit of the country as a whole. An example I would make; would people be willing to pay higher prices for goods to create and save American manufacturing jobs by not buying cheap to produce Chinese goods.
Moderate republicans and democrats working together to find common ground (not necessarily compromising) is the best way for our future.

The American people no longer are in possession of their country. The country has been hijacked by the very system that was designed to govern and protect it. Yes, democracy can be (and usually is) an ugly, messy thing to behold. The beautiful thing about a functional democracy is that everyone has the opportunity to open their mouths and voice their opinion...even when doing so reveals them to be a blithering idiot. The Looney Tunes Far Right manages to cross the line between racist and bat-$#!& crazy without even breaking a sweat. In so doing, those who inhabit the lunatic fringe have become a parody of themselves- caricatures so comical and so "out there" that no one save their fellow ideological travelers could ever hope to take them seriously. This is not to say, of course, that everyone on the Right is a racist, nor that they uniformly believe that Barack Obama is a closet Kenyan Socialist bent on turning this nation into some sort of Islamic Paradise along the lines of Saudi Arabia. Still, when you look at the blowhards who attended Glenn Beck's 9/12 Movement rally in Washington, it's not hard to see large amounts of not at all concealed racism at work here. I'd really like to be able to think that these folks actually have something positive to contribute, but when you strip away the anger and the bluster, what you're left with looks a lot like common, garden variety racism. If you oppose anything and everything Barack Obama stands for, that's your right in a free democracy. I don't expect you to agree with me (though I wouldn't argue with you if you did). What I do expect, and I don't think I'm being unreasonable here, is reason and balance. If you're screaming about things that are patently untrue, if you're dealing in character assassination, and/or if you're trafficking in code words for racism, why not just save those of us with a functional intellect the aggravation and shut up? If this is your stock in trade, you have nothing of value to add. Then again, if you're willing to calmly and rationally discuss the issues that concern you, I think you'll find that those of us on the other side of the ideological fence are more often than not willing to listen. There's something else to keep in mind here as well. Y'all spent eight years supporting and Administration that devoted it's energies to shoving its agenda down the throats of all Americans. Then you lost- badly- last November...and NOW America's going to Hell in a handbasket? AND it's Barack Obama's fault? Never mind that the recession began on your guy's watch. Never mind that the Census Bureau has laid responsibility for our current economic state squarely at the feet of George W. Bush. Never mind that Barack Obama was handled two poorly managed wars he never wanted. All this President is doing is attempting to clean up the mess left by the ineptitude and incompetence of the previous one. Y'all had your chance; frankly, you screwed the pooch. Unless you have something constructive to add, I don't want to hear it, because you frankly have no credibility. Barack Obama is not the problem here; he's simply been condemned to cleaning up the huge mess he was left. Perhaps in a different time, he actually could have made a difference, and perhaps he may yet do so. It's still early, and there's still hope. With all the caterwauling from the racist Right, it's going to be difficult to get everyone heading in the same direction. The more I hear these folks bleat about how they want their country back, the more difficult it is to escape the conclusion that the unspoken ending to that phrase is, "...when our President was White." I want my country back, as well. I want it back from the fools, and the bigots, and the corporate greedheads more concerned with lining their pockets than anything else. I want it back from the racists, the birthers, and those who traffic in sheer, unrestrained lunacy. I'm more than willing to talk with those I disagree with. What I'm not willing to do is share the floor whose stock in trade is ignorance, racism, and character assassination. Y'all had your chance, and you lost the last election. That's the way democracy works. Now it's time for you to lead, follow, or get the Hell out of the way.

Don't forget that not everyone who is against Obama and the Liberal leaders in Congress is a Bush supporter, or Republican, or Right Wing. Not everyone who attends tea party/ 9-12 rallies voted for McCain/Palin.....and not everyone who likes Glenn Beck is a blowhard.
You typed out a lengthy response of what amounts to a short essay, Truth Hurts, and I didn't see a single viable argument anywhere in it. I did see a ton of insults, dramatization, and generalizations. Will this be "par for the course" when you post in the future? If so, I'll save myself the 5 minutes of reading your diatribes.

I want my country back, as well. I want it back from the fools, and the bigots, and the corporate greedheads more concerned with lining their pockets than anything else. I want it back from the racists, the birthers, and those who traffic in sheer, unrestrained lunacy.. I am so sick of the whole white/black thing. To me, as a voter, race has absolutely nothing to do with it. I would have voted for Condeleeza Rice. I also voted for Michael Steele. I don't see people as black or white. I see the politicians as competent or incompetent. Obama and his supporters are the ones who keep cramming the whole race thing down everyone's throats. Obama is half white, yet he ran on the platform as America's first black president and anyone who doesn't like him or agree with him is automatically a racist. You say you want your country back... well so do I. I want a president who doesn't call the citizens of his country "the mob" when they don't agree with him. I want a president who doesn't have a mile long list of very close friends/associates who are known thugs, terrorists, or racists. I want a president who decreases the deficit... not triples it. While so many of the citizens are out of work, I want a president who doesn't give all of the jobs to his friends. If you are a friend of Obamas you not only get a job, but he will create a great job for you and make you a "CZAR". I want a president who doesn't take away any more of our freedom. I want a president who doesn't tax us any more than we already are. None of what I dislike about Obama is because he is black. Anyone who voted for Obama and his "change" made a mistake. Anyone who still believes in his "change" and the fascade he portrays... I truely feel sorry for you.

The draconian security measures put in place to silence dissent in Pittsburgh are disproportionate to any actual security concern. They are a response not to a real threat, but to the fear gripping the established centers of power. The power elite grasps, even if we do not, the massive fraud and theft being undertaken to save a criminal class on Wall Street and international speculators of the kinds who were executed in other periods of human history. They know the awful cost this plundering of state treasuries will impose on workers, who will become a permanent underclass. And they also know that once this is clear to the rest of us, rebellion will no longer be a foreign concept. The delegates to the G-20, the gathering of the world’s wealthiest nations, will consequently be protected by a National Guard combat battalion, recently returned from Iraq. The battalion will shut down the area around the city center, man checkpoints and patrol the streets in combat gear. Pittsburgh has augmented the city’s police force of 1,000 with an additional 3,000 officers. Helicopters have begun to buzz gatherings in city parks, buses driven to Pittsburgh to provide food to protesters have been impounded, activists have been detained, and permits to camp in the city parks have been denied. Web sites belonging to resistance groups have been hacked and trashed, and many groups suspect that they have been infiltrated and that their phones and e-mail accounts are being monitored. Our global economy, like our political system, has been hijacked by a tiny oligarchy, composed mostly of wealthy white men who serve corporations. They have pledged or raised a staggering $18 trillion, looted largely from state treasuries, to prop up banks and other financial institutions that engaged in suicidal acts of speculation and ruined the world economy. They have formulated trade deals so corporations can speculate across borders with currency, food and natural resources even as, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, 1.02 billion people on the planet struggle with hunger. Globalization has obliterated the ability of many poor countries to protect food staples such as corn, rice, beans and wheat with subsidies or taxes on imported staples. The abolishment of these protections has permitted the giant mechanized farms to wipe out tens of millions of small farmers—2 million in Mexico alone—bankrupting many and driving them off their land. Those who could once feed themselves can no longer find enough food, and the wealthiest governments use institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization like pit bulls to establish economic supremacy. There is little that most governments seem able to do to fight back. But the game is up. The utopian dreams of globalization have been exposed as a sham. Force is all the elite have left. We are living through one of civilization’s great seismic reversals. The ideology of globalization, like all utopias that are sold as inevitable and irreversible, has become a farce. The power elite, perplexed and confused, cling to the disastrous principles of globalization and its outdated language to mask the political and economic vacuum before us. The absurd idea that the marketplace alone should determine economic and political constructs caused the crisis. It led the G-20 to sacrifice other areas of human importance—from working conditions, to taxation, to child labor, to hunger, to health and pollution—on the altar of free trade. It left the world’s poor worse off and the United States with the largest deficits in human history. Globalization has become an excuse to ignore the mess. It has left a mediocre elite desperately trying to save a system that cannot be saved and, more important, trying to save itself. “Speculation,” then-President Jacques Chirac of France once warned, “is the AIDS of our economies.” We have reached the terminal stage. “Each of Globalization’s strengths has somehow turned out to have an opposing meaning,” John Ralston Saul wrote in “The Collapse of Globalism.” “The lowering of national residency requirements for corporations has morphed into a tool for massive tax evasion. The idea of a global economic system mysteriously made local poverty seem unreal, even normal. The decline of the middle class—the very basis of democracy—seemed to be just one of those things that happen, unfortunate but inevitable. That the working class and the lower middle class, even parts of the middle class, could only survive with more than one job per person seemed to be expected punishment for not keeping up. The contrast between unprecedented bonuses for mere managers at the top and the four-job families below them seemed inevitable in a globalized world. For two decades an elite consensus insisted that unsustainable third-world debts could not be put aside in a sort of bad debt reserve without betraying Globalism’s essential principles and moral obligations, which included an unwavering respect for the sanctity of international contracts. It took the same people about two weeks to abandon sanctity and propose bad debt banks for their own far larger debts in 2009.” The institutions that once provided alternative sources of power, including the press, government, agencies of religion, universities and labor unions, have proved morally bankrupt. They no longer provide a space for voices of moral autonomy. No one will save us now but ourselves. “The best thing that happened to the Establishment is the election of a black president,” Holmes said. “It will contain people for a given period of time, but time is running out. Suppose something else happens? Suppose another straw breaks? What happens when there is a credit card crisis or a collapse in commercial real estate? The financial system is very, very fragile. The legs are being kicked out from underneath it.” “Obama is in trouble,” Holmes went on. “The economic crisis is a structural crisis. The recovery is only a recovery for Wall Street. It can’t be sustained, and Obama will be blamed for it. He is doing everything Wall Street demands. But this will be a dead end. It is a prescription for disaster, not only for Obama but the Democratic Party. It is only groups like ours that provide hope. If labor unions will get off their ass and stop focusing on narrow legislation for their members, if they will go back to being social unions that embrace broad causes, we have a chance of effecting change. If this does not happen it will be a right-wing disaster.” Sure thing.. www.truthdig.com/report/item/20090921_globalization_goes_bankrupt/?ln

OMG Moosie! You are sounding like King Obama trying to shut up anyone who does not agree with him. Our own president is calling citizens who don't agree with him "the mob"... do you find this acceptable?? I do have something to talk about and I am exercising my right to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech... something liberals seem to have a real problem with. Moosie, think of Obamas list of past and current friends and associates who are racists, crooks, and terrorists... do you not have the slightest problem with this? Do you not have a problem that he making all of his buddies CZARs? You say don't condemn him for something that hasn't happened.... well sh!t is happening now. I don't even know what today's dollar amount of his spending is now up to. You say you haven't seen any additional taxes... where do you think this money is going to come from... the tooth fairy? That is the problem with taxes. If everyone paid their fair share of taxes then EVERYONE would care. As far as you quoting me on wanting a president who doesn't tax us anymore and one who doesn't take away any more of our freedom... I am not speaking of just Obama, I am speaking of him as well as many other presidents/administrations we have had since our Constitution was written. I am happy for you that you are content with Obama and his administration, I am not. I don't want to burst your bubble Moosie, but if you really want me to draft up a list for you on how you are already being affected with loss of freedom and taxation I will do this for you. You also say don't condemn Obama for things he hasn't yet done... do you really think I (and millions of other citizens) can remain quiet when we see a train wreck coming?

... but if you really want me to draft up a list for you on how you are already being affected with loss of freedom and taxation I will do this for you. Yeah, how about doing that? I will when, and if, Moosie asks me to do so. As much as I disagree with Moosie (and Funnel) on politics, I still like them and can respect them. I think they have both been brainwashed (I'm sure they may feel just the same about me) but I still like them and will debate my views with them. You, however, come across as someone I do not know and do not care to know. I see posts from people like you "truth hurts" on many different sites and forums. You don't ever add anything to the local discussions but come on specifically to put your political agenda in the face of everyone else. Its quite possible that you don't even live anywhere near Kent Island and you googled political discussions and found this. Whomever you are, I'm not going to answer any requests from you. You never answered any of my questions. You are repetitive, disrespectful, and you need a history lesson and a lesson on our Constitution.

I think they have both been brainwashed (I'm sure they may feel just the same about me) but I still like them and will debate my views with them. Brainwashed? By whom? And how? And you need to know that this word is triggering for me (my father accused my mother of "brainwashing" me and my sister when we were growing up), so I would ask you to really consider whether you want to use it or not. I'm giving you a chance to change your mind here, because being told I've been brainwashed makes me angry... And you wouldn't like me when I'm angry. (Hulk quote.) No, I haven't been brainwashed. I don't even watch "liberal" news shows (the occasional Daily Show or Colbert Report, but not regularly). My husband and I don't even watch TV. I get my news from news.google.com, which I've personalized to include news from France, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, U.K., Nigeria, Pakistan, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Malaysia, and the Philippines. My father's a Republican, as is most of his family. My in-laws are conservative Christian Republicans. I went to a college where I was taught to think, question, and debate (St. John's College in Annapolis). So, I'll ask you again: how have I been brainwashed and by who? And I'll ask you not to call me brainwashed again just because I don't have the same political opinions you do.

lynn-- i appreciate that we do not agree, but i see arguments here that are so closed to other possibilities and so convinced of their position without any real justification. you mentioned a lot of issues you are concerned about, but you did not answer my question. please do not answer with what may or may not happen in the future. neither one of us has a crystal ball. what i see is that i have not had any freedom taken away (except maybe on this forum, where anyone with an opinion that is not right-wing/conservative/republican, or in some cases extremest, is dismissed as brainwashed and/or smited). i have not seen any additional tax placed on me. i will not blast people who are trying to improve things that are wrong; i will give them the opportunity to show what they can do. i will keep an open mind, and try to maintain hope in the future of this country. as for truth hurts and other posters, they are presenting another side--or the other side, if you will. you don't like it, so you blast the messenger. and, btw, don't other posters on here google their views and post them? and what does any of this have to do with living on the island? plenty of posters here do not. peace.

Role of Obama's 'czars' questioned seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politics/2009881858_czar17.htmlWhite House spokesman Tommy Vietor said Republicans have mislabeled key agency personnel. "The term 'czar' is largely a media creation to make jobs that have existed under multiple administrations sound more exciting," he said. Indeed, presidents long have used special officials to deal with difficult problems. WASHINGTON — On paper, they are special advisers, chairmen of White House boards, special envoys and Cabinet-agency deputies. But critics call them "czars," and their increasing numbers have become a flash point for conservative anger at President Obama. Lists detail as many as 40 "czars" linked to Obama, although some positions existed long before he took office and some, in fact, won Senate approval. There's "faith-based czar" Joshua DuBois, who heads the White House's Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, created by then-President George W. Bush in 2001; "Afghanistan czar" Richard Holbrooke; "intelligence czar" Dennis Blair, director of national intelligence, a post created after the Sept. 11 attacks; Mideast peace czar George Mitchell; and "border czar" Alan Bersin, a homeland-security assistant secretary charged with improving border security. Some "czars" guide the president on central policy issues. Carol Browner is assistant for energy and climate change; Paul Volcker chairs the Economic Recovery Board; Ed Montgomery coordinates federal efforts to spark economic development in areas hard hit by the sharp decline in auto-industry jobs; and Nancy-Ann DeParle heads the White House Office of Health Reform.

I was using the word "brainwashed" in a joking manner... as I was referring both to you and I and our very strong political views on things... no, I don't really think you were ever really brainwashed. Just as someone may refer to someone as "deaf" or "blind" when it comes to certain things... certainly no harm intended for you (eventhough my day has been a bit boring and seeing the Hulk would liven things up!)
